August Rohling and his Influence on the Formation of Austria-Hungary Antisemitism. Focused on the Czech coutries.

Abstract:

V práci jsem se zabývala otázkou, zda mohla Rohlingova náboženská klasifikace společenských jevů ovlivnit společenský vývoj 19. století Rakouska-Uherska. Rohling ve svém díle oživil náboženské předsudky i stereotypní vnímání, které vychází z vymezování křesťanství vůči židovství.Využitím domnělých interpretací „tajného ústního učení“ nebo citací z Talmudu aktivuje motiv rituální vraždy. Tematikou rituálních úkonů, které se odehrávají ve dni smíření, podporuje nedůvěryhodnost židovského slibu, čímž klasifikuje židovskou identitu jako křesťanství nepřátelskou a připisuje jí významné místo v běžné křesťansko-židovské komunikaci. Protože pojednávám o historicky podmíněných jevech, zaměřila jsem se prvotně na rozbor společenské situace Rakouska-Uherska na konci 19. století. S ohledem na působnost Augusta Rohlinga jsem se více soustředila na přiblížení situace ve Vídni, Praze a v Maďarsku. V historickém přehledu jsem sledovala aspekt rituálních vražd, který s Rohlingovým dílem úzce souvisí. Další část práce je zaměřena na rozbor Rohlingovy knihy Der Talmudjude jako východiska pro definování pojmů antitalmudismus a antijudaismus. Následně pracuji s jeho spisem Meine Antworten, který zahrnuje interakci Rohlingových názorů se vzdělanci jeho doby a rozpracovává termín antisemitismus křesťanský. Rohlingovy názory srovnávám s postoji některých českých autorů, kteří se na jeho dílo odvolávali; tím míním zejména Rudolfa Vrbu, J. M. Baláka a Jana Nerudu. V tomto úseku práce se snažím nastínit jejich rozdílné vnímání protižidovského postoje a ukazuji, jakým způsobem pojem antisemitismus definují právě oni. Další výraznou složkou mojí práce je popis průběhu soudního sporu mezi Augustem Rohlingem a J.S. Blochem, který zaznamenal Blochův obhájce Joseph Kopp. V této části ukazuji, jakým způsobem Rohlingovy názory mohly ovlivnit Koppův pohled na antisemitismus. V závěru práce se snažím odpovědět na otázku, zda je možné Rohlingovo dílo považovat za projev antijudaismu jako odporu proti náboženskému systému judaismu a zda je možné takový antijudaismus začlenit do tzv. moderních antisemitských projevů. V rámci této diskuze ukazuji možné problémy a úskalí, která při zacházení s pojmem antisemitismus vyvstávají a nejen na těchto místech je spojuji s problematikou identity a soužití minority a majority na jednom území. V tomto ohledu pracuji se sociologickými pojmy a snažím se tak poukázat nejen na problematiku definice pojmů samotných, ale na komplikovanost vlastní religionistické vědecké práce, která tuto terminologii může využívat.

Abstract:

In the thesis I deal with a question whether Rohling’s religious classification of social phenomena could influence the social development of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 19th century. In his work, Rohling revived religious prejudice as well as stereotypical perception based on defining of Christianity against Jewishness. By using the supposed interpretations of “secret oral teaching” or quotations from Talmud he activates a motive of a ritual murder. He uses the subject of ritual acts taking place on the Reconciliation Day to support the lack of credibility of the Jewish pledge by means of which he defines the Jewish identity as hostile to Christianity and gives it a significant place in the everyday Christian- Jewish communication. As I discuss historically conditioned phenomena, primarily I focused on an analysis of the social situation in the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of the 19th century. As regards the sphere of activity of August Rohling, I focused more on outlining of the situation in Vienna, Prague and Hungary. In the historic outline I deal with the aspect of ritual murders connected narrowly with Rohling’s work. The following part of the thesis is focused on an analysis of Rohling’s book Der Talmudjude, as the source of definitions of the terms of anti- Talmudism and anti-Judaism. Subsequently I work with his book Meine Antworten which includes interaction of Rohling’s opinions with other educated people of his time and it elaborates the term of anti-Semitism as a Christian term. Rohling’s opinions are compared with the opinions of some Czech authors who referred to his work, i.e. mainly Rudolf Vrba, J. M. Balák or Jan Neruda. In this part of the thesis I try to describe their different perception of anti-Jewish attitude and I present the way in which the term of anti-Semitism is described by them. Another important part of my thesis is a description of the lawsuit between August Rohling and J. S. Bloch which was recorded by Bloch’s lawyer Joseph Kopp. In this part I point out the way in which Rohling’s opinions could influence Kopp’s view of anti-Semitism. In the conclusion of the thesis I try to answer the question whether Rohling’s work can be considered to be a manifestation of anti-Judaism as resistance against the religious system of Judaism and whether it is possible to include such anti-Judaism among so-called modern anti-Semitic phenomena. Within the scope of this discussion I point out the possible problems and pitfalls which arise when working with the term of anti- Semitism and here as well as in other parts of the thesis I connect them with the issues of identity and coexistence of minority and majority in one territory. In this regard I work with sociological terms and thus I try to point out not only the issues connected with defining of the actual terms but also the complicated nature of the actual religionist scientific work which can make use of this terminology.
