Age Changes of the Bony Labyrinth of the Inner Ear

Abstract:

The bone labyrinth of the inner ear is important for humans as a solid shell of the statoacoustic system. It is already formed during prenatal period and according to available studies it reaches its adult size before the birth. At the same time, there is not much information whether there are any changes in the bone labyrinth during life after birth. The aim of this thesis was to compare the measured dimensions of the bony labyrinth of the inner ear of the same individuals recorded by two non-invasive imaging methods: 2D X-ray images and 3D CT models. The next aim was to statistically test the differences in dimensions of the bony labyrinth between age categories. A total of 173 temporal bones were available, of which 83 were in pairs. Differences were found when comparing values between X-rays and CT models, where larger values showed mostly dimensions measured on CT models. Significant differences between age categories were found only when evaluating CT models, in three age categories out of five – infant, child and adolescent. Some variability has also been found between men and women in younger and older adult age categories.

Abstract:

Kostěný labyrint vnitřního ucha je pro člověka důležitý jako pevný obal ústrojí rovnováhy a sluchu. Formuje se již během prenatálního období a podle dostupných studií dosahuje svých dospělých rozměrů ještě před narozením. Zároveň není mnoho informací o tom, jestli dochází k určitým změnám kostěného labyrintu i během života po narození. Cílem této práce bylo porovnat naměřené rozměry kostěného labyrintu vnitřního ucha stejných jedinců zaznamenaných dvěma neinvazivními zobrazovacími metodami: 2D RTG snímky a 3D CT modely. Dalším cílem bylo statisticky otestovat rozdíly rozměrů kostěného labyrintu mezi věkovými kategoriemi. Celkově bylo k dispozici 173 spánkových kostí, z toho 83 bylo v párech. Rozdíly byly nalezeny při porovnávání hodnot mezi RTG snímky a CT modely, kde větší hodnoty většinou vykazovaly rozměry měřené na CT modelech. Statisticky významné rozdíly mezi věkovými kategoriemi byly nalezeny při hodnocení CT modelů, a to u tří věkových kategorií z pěti – novorozenec, dítě a adolescent. Určitá variabilita byla nalezena i mezi muži a ženami ve věkových kategoriích mladší a starší dospělí.
