The American Innocence Versus European Experience: Comparison of The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James and the Film The Barber of Siberia

Abstract:

One of the recurrent topics in Henry James's work is the conflict (and its usual tragic consequence) between American innocence or na{\"\i}ve purity and European experience or corruptness. The Portrait of a Lady is a typical representative of a novel dealing with similar theme. On the contrary, American-Russian film The Barber of Siberia offers rather different view of the given issue. Using a detailed analysis of both primary works, with support of the authors{\crq} biographies, critiques, as well as their own words spoken through the characters in both the novel and the film, this bachelor paper aims to compare the different perspectives on innocence and experience concerning the two cultures.

Abstract:

Jedním z často se opakujících témat v díle Henryho Jamese je střet (a jeho mnohdy tragické vyústění) americké nevinnosti či naivní čistoty s evropskou zkušeností, případně zkažeností. The Portrait of a Lady je typickým románem, jež se tímto tématem zabývá. Naopak americko-ruský film The Barber of Siberia nabízí poněkud odlišný pohled na dané téma. Na základě podrobné analýzy obou primárních děl a s oporou děl sekundárních tato bakalářská práce porovná, jak se pohled na nevinnost a zkušenost v obou dílech liší, jak jsou vytvořeny protagonistky a protagonisté těchto děl jakožto představitelé odlišných kultur a jakých formálních prostředků obě díla využívají. Práce se dále zmíní o dalších motivech obou děl.
