Size and Shape Differences between Ulnar and Radial Loops in Finger Dermatoglyphies

Abstract:

Loops are the most asymmetrical dermatoglyphic pattern. Today they are divided into radial and ulnar based on the position of triradius and slope of the papillar lines on the hand from which a given fingerprint originates. The aim of this thesis was to find out whether there are characteristic differences in size or shape between radial and ulnar loops, which could be used to assess side and hand of the fingerprint on the basis of radio-ulnar asymmetry, and thereby simplify the identification of the individual in dactyloscopy. Differences between radial and ulnar loops were studied on scanned fingerprints of 90 individuals (50 radial and 441 ulnar loops) and selected fingerprints of 40 individuals (20 radial and 20 ulnar loops) in order to increase the frequency of radial loops in the studied sample. Twenty-three specific traits which best express the size and shape of the fingerprint pattern were studied on the skeleton of the pattern and distal interphalangeal flexion line. Dimensions were obtained by digitalizing 33 landmarks defined using radial raster, followed by computation of the distances between them. Differences between traits were analysed using non-parametric statistical tests conducted separately for radial and ulnar loops on the second finger, second and third fingers together and for all radial and respective ulnar loops, all with regard to sex. The differences between radial and ulnar loops in distances and ratios of the edge regions of the pattern radiants, i.e. on the cauda of the pattern were statistically significant. The obtained results suggest that in radial loops the cauda is more spread apart and the core is slightly closer from the caput of the pattern to the cauda, whereas in ulnar loops the cauda is less spread apart and the core is markedly moved from the caput of the pattern to the cauda. More detailed interpretation of statistical results would require future studies with a larger number of objects in the analysed categories and formulation of clearer conclusions should be supported by advanced analysis of the shape differences using geometric morphometrics.

Abstract:

Kľučky sú najasymetrickejší dermatoglyfický vzor. V súčasnosti sa delia na radiálne a ulnárne na základe polohy trirádia a sklonu papilárnych línií – s ohľadom na stranovú príslušnosť ruky, z ktorej daný odtlačok prsta pochádza. Cieľom tejto práce bolo zistiť, či existujú medzi radiálnymi a ulnárnymi kľučkami také veľkostné alebo tvarové rozdiely, ktoré by umožňovali na základe radio-ulnárnej asymetrie nájdeného odtlačku prsta zistiť, z ktorej ruky pochádza, a tým zjednodušiť individuálnu identifikáciu v daktyloskopii. Rozdiely medzi radiálnymi a ulnárnymi kľučkami boli študované na naskenovaných odtlačkoch prstov 90 jedincov (50 radiálnych a 441 ulnárnych kľučkách) a cielene vybraných odtlačkoch prstov 40 jedincov (20 radiálnych a 20 ulnárnych kľučkách) z dôvodu zvýšenia frekvencie zastúpenia radiálnych kľučiek v skúmanej vzorke. Na kostre vzoru a distálnej interfalangeálnej ryhe bolo sledovaných 23 vybraných znakov, ktoré najlepšie vyjadrovali veľkosť a tvar vzoru. Rozmery boli získané digitalizáciou 33 bodov definovaných pomocou radiálneho rastra a následným výpočtom vzdialeností medzi týmito bodmi. Pomocou neparametrických testov boli analyzované rozdiely medzi radiálnymi a ulnárnymi kľučkami osobitne na druhom prste, na druhom a treťom prste spolu a u všetkých radiálnych a ich príslušných ulnárnych kľučkách vždy s ohľadom na pohlavie. Štatisticky významné boli rozdiely medzi radiálnymi a ulnárnymi kľučkami v rozmeroch a pomeroch zahŕňajúcich krajnú hodnotenú oblasť na vzorových radiantách, t.j. na chvoste kľučky. Z výsledkov vyplýva, že u radiálnych kľučiek je chvost vzoru otvorenejší a jadro je mierne posunuté od hlavy vzoru smerom k jeho chvostu, zatiaľ čo u ulnárnych kľučiek je chvost vzoru uzavretejší a jadro vzoru výraznejšie posunuté od hlavy vzoru smerom k jeho chvostu. Presnejšia interpretácia štatistických výsledkov by však vyžadovala ďalší výskum s väčším počtom objektov v analyzovaných kategóriách a formuláciu jasnejších záverov by bolo vhodné podporiť priamou analýzou tvarových rozdielov využívajúcou metódy geometrickej morfometrie.
