The Catastrophic Flood in 1927 and Coping with its Consequences

Abstract:

Událost, která se stala 8. července 1927, představovala velký extrém. Byla to jedna z nejděsivějších hydrometeorologických katastrof v první polovině 20. století, která zasáhla oblast východních Krušných hor, Saska a Českého středohoří. V tomto regionu bylo v letech 1850-1940 zaznamenáno devět případů katastrofálních povodní. Ta z roku 1927 byla nejzávažnější. Celkově roční úhrn srážek v Krušných horách činí 800- 1200 mm. V tuto osudnou noc byly celkové srážky přibližně 130 mm během 3 hodin, což je více jak desetina celoročního průměru v oblasti. Povodeň tak zasáhla hřebeny Krušných hor, kde napáchala největší škody. Stékající voda a krupobití pak následně zanechaly obrovské škody v obcích ležících v Českém středohoří. Nutností bylo zřídit komise, které prošly postižené obvody, sepsaly soupisy majetku obyvatel, škody na obecním a státním majetku. Cílem práce je zjistit, jaké byly následky povodně, jaké dopady měla na obyvatelstvo a podívat se na to, jakým způsobem upoutala pozornost úřadů v roce 1927. Zajímá nás, jak v této situaci postupovala vláda, která se v předešlých letech těmito událostmi příliš nezabývala.

Abstract:

The event which occurred on July 8, 1927, was a great extreme. It was one of the most frightening hydro-meteorological events in the first half of the 20th century that affected the area of the eastern Ore Mountains, Saxony and the Central Bohemian Uplands. Between 1850 and 1940 there were recorded nine cases of catastrophic floods in this region. The flood in 1927 was the most serious one. The total annual precipitation in the Ore Mountains is 800 - 1200 mm. On that fateful night the total rainfall was approximately 130 mm in 3 hours, which is more than the tenth of the annual average in the area. The flood hit the ridge of the Ore Mountains, where it caused the biggest damage. The running water and hailstorms subsequently left huge damage in the villages located in the Central Bohemian Uplands area. It was necessary to set up commissions that went through the affected districts, and made lists of inventories of the inhabitants' property as well as the damage to municipal and state property. The aim of this work is to find out the consequences of the flood, the impact it had on the population and the way it attracted the attention of the authorities in 1927. We are interested in how the government acted in this situation, especially when it had not dealt with these events much in previous years.
