The usage of multi-factor authentication amongst university students

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat používaní multi-faktorové autentizace (MFA) u studentů a studentek vysokých škol a jak hodnotí její použitelnost. Data byla sesbírána pomocí online dotazníku. Hlavní výsledky práce jsou: většina studentů a studentek používá MFA alespoň v některých kontextech (hlavně v kontextu finančním) a užívaní MFA je primárně ovlivněno technickými znalostmi a počtem zařízení, na kterých musí MFA používat. Na to, jak studenti a studenky hodnotí použitelnost MFA, mělo největší vliv jak moc dobrovolně MFA metody používají. Použitelnost byla hodnocena lépe u MFA metod, které nevyžadovaly přepisování alfanumerického kódu z jednoho zařízení na druhé. Z našich výsledků vyplývá, že univerzitní studenti a studentky v České republice jsou znalí toho, jak MFA funguje. MFA metody, které vyžadují menší množství kognitivní práce od uživatelů a uživatelek, by měly být preferované a nabízené v autentizačních systémech.

Abstract:

The aim of this work was to analyze the usage of multi-factor authentication (MFA) amongst university students and how they rate the usability of different MFA methods. The data were gathered through an online survey. The main findings are that most students use MFA at least in some contexts (mainly financial), and their usage of MFA is mainly influenced by technical knowledge and the number of devices where the students had to use MFA. The perceived usability was influenced only by the students voluntariness to use MFA. The perceived usability was higher for MFA methods that did not require rewriting of alphanumeric code from one device to other. From our results, we can say that university students in Czech Republic are familiar with the MFA process. Also, MFA methods that need less cognitive work from the user are preferred and should be offered to the users.
