Multi-Factor Authentication in Large Scale

Abstract:

Každodenní činnosti se postupně přesouvají do virtuálního světa včetně komunikace, bankovnictví, obchodu a dalších. Základním předpokladem této migrace je ustanovení digitálních identit jednotlivých uživatelů. Identifikace uživatelů by nebyla možná bez řádné autentizace. Autentizace pomocí hesel, ač běžná, trpí řadou bezpečnostních problémů; tudíž jsou vyvíjeny nové metody autentizace, které lze kombinovat do vícefaktorové autentizace. Práce srovnává několik autentizačních metod, které mohou být použity pro vícefaktorovou autentizaci tisíců uživatelů přes internet. Vybrané metody byly implementovány a otestovány v testovacím prostředí Jednotného přihlášení Masarykovy univerzity.

Abstract:

Physical world activities have been migrating to the virtual world - this includes communication, banking, commerce and more. One of the requirements to make this migration happen is establishing a digital identity of each user. Identification of users would not be possible without proper authentication. Authentication with passwords, although common, faces a number of security issues, so new authentication methods have been developed to be combined into multi-factor authentication. This work provides a comparison of various multi-factor authentication methods, which can be used for authentication of thousands of users over the internet. Some of the methods, which were identified as suitable, have been implemented and tested in the Masaryk University Unified login identity provider.
