Uncovered interest parity and its use in the inflation targeting regime on the example of the Czech Republic and Hungary

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je vysvětlit koncept nekryté úrokové parity. Podrobně rozebrat a pomocí dynamického modelu nekryté úrokové parity propojit hypotézy o apreciaci měnového kurzu a očekávané depreciaci měnového kurzu země s vyšší úrokovou mírou. Nekrytá úroková parita hraje významnou roli v měnové politice centrálních bank a její využití v režimu cílování inflace je interpretováno v druhé polovině teoretické časti této bakalářské práce. V praktické části pak za pomocí ekonometrického modelu a grafického zobrazení je ověřována hypotéza, na základě které se předpokládá, že očekávaná změna spotového kurzu vypočtená podle nekryté úrokové parity je nevychýleným odhadem skutečné změny spotového kurzu. Tato hypotéza je analyzovaná na příkladu České republiky a Maďarska v letech 2008 až 2018, tedy dvou zemí cílujících inflaci. Ze zjištěných výsledků je zřejmé, že v obou případech se ve sledovaném období skutečný spotový kurz zdaleka nevyvíjí tak, jak předpokládá ekonomická teorie a nebyla zjištěna žádná pozitivní závislost mezi sledovanými proměnnými. Naopak v řadě případů se spotový kurz pohybuje přesně naopak, než se předpokládalo a nelze tak považovat očekávaný spotový kurz za kvalitní odhad budoucího spotového kurzu.

Abstract:

The aim of the Bachelor thesis is to explain the concept of the uncovered interest parity. With the use of the dynamic model of the uncovered interest parity to analyse the topic in detail and make a link of hypotheses about appreciation of exchange rate and expected depreciation of exchange rate of the country with a higher interest rate. Uncovered interest parity has a significant role in the central bank’s Monetary Policy. Use of this conception in inflation targeting regime is interpreted in the second part of this Bachelor thesis. The practical part of the Bachelor thesis provides, with the use of the econometric model and the chart, a verification of the hypotheses that assumes that expected change of the spot rate calculated according to uncovered interest parity model is an estimate without any deviation of the spot rate´s real change. This hypothesis is examined on the example of two inflation-targeting countries, Czech Republic and Hungary, within years 2008 to 2018. The result of this examination shows that in both cases the real spot rate does not match with the estimations provided by the economic theory and no positive correlation between given variables was proven. On the contrary, it was found that the spot rate moves exactly the opposite of what was expected. Therefore, it is expected that the spot rate is not a reliable source for the prognosis of a future spot rate.
