Characteristics Determining the Typology of E-sport Players

Abstract:

E-sport je mladé, ale rychle rostoucí odvětví. Doposud nebylo provedeno příliš mnoho výzkumů na toto téma a celkově se terminologie teprve ustanovuje. Pro její stanovení a celkově pochopení toho, co e-sport či kompetitivní hraní je a jak funguje, je nutné pochopit jeho spotřebitele. Na vzorku hráčů titulu League of Legends tato práce ověřuje předpoklad existence čtyř kategorií hráčů (příležitostní, pravidelní, polo-profesionální a profesionální) a charakteristik, na základě kterých lze hráče odlišit a do těchto kategorií zařadit. Zahrnuty jsou nejen sociodemografické charakteristiky, herní zkušenosti, intenzita hraní a zkušenosti s turnaji, ale i motivační faktory. Z vybraných charakteristik patří mezi významné právě intenzita hraní, herní divize, preferovaný herní server, ale i samotné plány na profesionální kariéru, zatímco motivační faktory nemají na typ hráče vliv. Přínosem je objevení významných proměnných, jež doposud nebyly do průzkumů zahrnovány, ale také snad celkově příspěvek k doposud málo prozkoumané oblasti.

Abstract:

E-sport is a young but fast-growing industry. Not much research has been done on this topic so far, and overall the terminology is still being established. In order to determine and generally understand what e-sports or competitive gaming is and how it works, it is necessary to understand its consumers. On the sample of League of Legends players, this work verifies the assumption of the existence of four categories of players (casual, regular, semi-professional and professional) and the characteristics on the basis of which players can be distinguished and included in these categories. Not only socio-demographic characteristics, gaming experience, intensity of playing and tournament experience are included, but also motivational factors. Among the selected characteristics, the intensity of the plaing, the game division (rank), the preferred game server, but also the plans for a professional career are important, while the motivating factors do not affect the type of player. The benefit is the discovery of significant variables that have not yet been included in the surveys, but also perhaps the overall contribution to the hitherto little-explored area.
