Wenceslas II. and his relation to the Church in light Zbraslav chronicle

Abstract:

Tato práce řeší pohled na vztah Václava II. k církvi ve světle Zbraslavské kroniky, narativního pramene počátku 14. století. Na základě heuristiky byl zpracován rozsah sekundárního materiálu pro seznámení s odbornými závěry dalších badatelů. Rozbor informací podaných autory kroniky byl podroben následné komparaci s dosavadními poznatky na tomto poli. Analýzou získaných výsledků bádání bylo zjištěno, že pohled na vztah panovníka a církve podávaný zbraslavskými kronikáři není tak jednoznačný, jak může být na první pohled patrné. Vedle okázale předkládané zbožnosti panovníka představuje kronika i další charakterové rysy ideálního středověkého vládce. Výsledkem této práce bylo zjištění, že pro Václava II. byla církev jedním z nástrojů, které měly sloužit k prosazení zájmů panovníka v mocenské hře. Bádání vedlo dále k závěru, že dalším z důvodů sepsání života Václava II. na stránkách Zbraslavské kroniky byl záměr vytvořit obraz ideálního vzoru pro budoucí následovníky.

Abstract:

This work addresses the view of Wenceslas II's relationship to the Church in the light of the Zbraslav Chronicle, a narrative source of the 14th century. On the basis of heuristics, a range of second-hand material was developed to familiarize with the expert findings of other researchers. The analysis of the information provided by the authors of the chronicle was subjected to a subsequent comparison with the present knowledge in this field. By analyzing the results of the research it was found that the view of the relation between the monarch and the Church administered by the Zbraslav chroniclers is not as clear as it can be seen at first glance. Besides the piety of the sovereign, the chronicle presents the other characteristics of the ideal medieval ruler. The result of this work was the finding that for Wenceslas II the Church was one of the tools to serve the sovereign's interests in the power play. The research also led to the conclusion that another reason for writing the life of Wenceslas II on the pages of the Zbraslav Chronicle was the intention to create an image of the ideal pattern for future followers.
