The Bones Brigade Video Show as an establishment of aesthetic norms of skateboard videos

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce představuje estetické funkce, normy a hodnoty skateboardového videa The Bones Brigade Video Show. Ačkoliv toto video vzniklo primárně jako propagační nástroj, práce dokazuje, že jsou to právě jeho estetické vlastnosti, které jsou klíčové. Nejprve je video zasazeno do jeho funkcí, tedy do jeho pozice v historii skateboardingu, v historii firmy Powell-Peralta, v historii samotného videa a do jeho pozice ohledně ideologických významů. Ke zjištění norem snímku The Bones Brigade Video Show je využito neoformalistické analýzy, díky níž jsou nalezeny konkrétní stylistické prostředky, které vytvořily základní kámen pro natáčení skateboardových videí. Vývoj těchto norem je v práci společně s ostatními aspekty (funkce propagační, ideologická, atd.) vložen do širší diskuze s dalšími skateboardovými videi, které jsou tímto snímkem ovlivněny.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis presents the aesthetic functions, norms and values of a skateboard video called The Bones Brigade Video Show. This thesis proves that even if this video was created primarily as a promotional tool, it is the aesthetic aspects which became the most important. Firstly, the video is put into its functions; meaning in the context of the history of skateboarding, history of the company Powell-Peralta, history of the video and then in the context of its ideological meanings. To find the norms of The Bones Brigade Video Show, this thesis used a neoformalist analysis, which helped to find specific stylistic features that created a staple for skateboard video filmmaking. The development of these norms along with other aspects (promotional function, ideological meanings, etc.) are then put into a broader discussion with other following skateboard videos, which were influenced by The Bones Brigade Video Show.
