Growing the ecological architecture: reasons for development and possibilities of assessment of eco-friendly residental houses in Czech Republic

Abstract:

Snahy o ekologicky příznivé stavění se objevují jako samostatný fenomén současné architektonické scény i environmentálního úsilí. Práce nabízí zatím chybějící propojení obou pohledů, přičemž se zaměřuje na obytné domy v České republice. Ekologická architektura je často chápána ve zúženém pohledu, soustředěném na úspory energie či na přírodní stavební materiály. Mnoho architektů odrazuje právě jednostrannost tohoto trendu. Přesto pojem „ekologická architektura“, s ohledem na původní význam slova „oikos“, nejvýstižněji charakterizuje domy, které hospodaří ohleduplně vůči blízkému i vzdálenému okolí, poskytují příjemné prostředí, nabízejí pocit domova a přináležení. Jaké podmínky umožňují vznik ekologických domů a co naopak rozvoji brání? Významně působí vnější faktory, jako legislativa, mezinárodní dohody, profesní a občanský aktivismus či působení médií. Ekonomické důvody v českém prostředí zatím nepředstavují příliš silný motiv. Proto jsou důležitější osobní motivace stavebníků, někdy explicitně vyjádřené, jindy interpretovatelné z charakteru domu. Pochopení rozdílných přístupů je důležité, neboť teprve životní způsob obyvatel v konkrétním místě a domě určuje míru ekologické příznivosti. Základ pro změnu přístupu tvoří hodnotová východiska, přesto diskuze o etice architektury v českém prostředí probíhá zřídka. Podobně environmentální etika často opomíjí zastavěné prostředí. Etiku ekologické architektury můžeme chápat ve třech základních rovinách – jako profesní etiku architektury, která stanovuje zásady pro kvalitní architekturu a roli architekta v procesu vzniku domů, dále jako etiku zaměřenou na potřeby člověka, obyvatele domu i požadavky společnosti, a také jako environmentální etiku, jež vysvětluje hodnoty vedoucí k ekologicky příznivým řešením v architektuře. Pro posouzení ekologické příznivosti domů vznikla celá řada hodnotících metod a postupů. U většiny dochází k soustředění na snadno měřitelné hodnoty (jako spotřeba tepla na vytápění, přepočet na metry zastavěné plochy apod.). Jiné vlivy, jako náročnost či šetrnost obyvatel, zásah stavby do krajiny, či poskytnutí krásného a hodnotného obytného prostředí, jsou eliminovány kvůli obtížnosti posuzování. Ekologický přístup musí také zohledňovat souvislosti na různých úrovních – města, čtvrti, domu a bytu. Případové studie, uvedené v příloze práce, umožňují sledovat působení těchto vlivů a odlišných uživatelských přístupů u čtyř řešení ekologického bydlení, navržených autorkou. Závěr práce pak rozvíjí úvahu nad možností ekologické architektury jako samostatného slohu.

Abstract:

The pursuit for eco-friendly building emerges as a new phenomenon in the architectural as well the environmental scene. The thesis proposes an interconnection between both perspectives. It focusses on residential houses in the Czech Republic. The most common point of view comprehends the ecological architecture simply as an energy-saving building or building using natural materials. For many architects, this rather one-sided understanding constitutes the reason for rejection of the ecological architecture. Despite of that, the term „ecological architecture“ (considering the original meaning of ancient Greek „oikos“) allows to naturally characterize the houses, which are responsible to their surroundings as well as to their inhabitants, and offer comforting environment, with a feeling of home and belonging. What are the conditions facilitating the growth of the ecological architecture? And what are the limits? The important factors can be of formal setting and of external influences – legislation, international conventions, actions of professional and non-governmental organizations, and the media impact. In contrast, the impact of economic factors is not very strong in the Czech Republic. The personal motivations of clients weigh more. The motivations can sometimes be explicitly expressed, sometimes understandable from the character of the building. Distinguishing the different motivations can help to better understand the limits of proliferation of the ecological architecture, and the interconnection between the life-style of the inhabitants and the houses. The combination of life-style and house structure assesses and determines the environmental impact. The transition to more environmental-friendly building is founded in the basis of ethical values. The debates on ethical issues appear rarely in architecture. Similarly, the environmental ethics does not include the built environment, too. The ethics of ecological built environment can be seen in three dimensions: 1. the professional ethics, which sets the basis for architectural quality and the role of the architect in the building-design process; 2. the ethics concentrating on human needs –the personal needs of house dwellers and on the social demands; and 3. the environmental ethics leading to more environmentally responsible solutions. There exist many types of environmental assessment methods for architecture and built environment. Most of them concentrate on measurable items (heating-energy consumption, built square meters and so on). Other values (voluntary modesty of dwellers, landscape impact, creating pleasant and harmless home environment) are not reflected, because of difficulties of their assessment. The ecological approach must take into consideration also the connections between the various scales involved – the city, the district, the house, the flat. Four case studies, given in the Appendix and presenting four house-designs by the author of the thesis, can help to better understand different factors of decision making in the ecological architecture designing. Conclusion of the thesis offers a reflection on the possibilities of ecological architecture as a new architectural style.
