The Religion and History in El hereje by Miguel Delibes

Abstract:

This piece of work aims to elaborate on the religion and history in the novel El hereje by Miguel Delibes. However, the paper starts with the elaboration on the concept of the historical novel, asks for the proper classification which is based on the work of authors such as Amado or García Gual. Then it continues with the origin of the historical novel enumerating its significant representatives from different parts of the world and with the listing of the genre of the historical novel based on Lukács and the concept of the anachronism by Prieto. When the historical novel is classified, the piece of work focuses on the interpretation of the novel from the historical and religious point of view. Firstly, the religiousness does not hold an important role within the book, but then during the life of the main character Cipriano Salcedo, it develops into the most important one, which leads to the burning on the stake. At the end of the paper, the problematics of the religion in Spain in the XVI century is presented as well as the contemporary point of view on the Inquisition. Then the comparison of the historical reality and the story in the novel taking into consideration the occurrence as well as the characters which are indispensable for the creation of the setting of the novel. The thesis concludes with a small route of the El hereje in Valladolid. The map shows the major tourist spots.

Abstract:

El objetivo de este trabajo es, como indica su nombre, presentar cómo Miguel Delibes expone los motivos relacionados con la religión e historia en su novela El hereje. El trabajo empieza con la elaboración del concepto de la novela histórica, pregunta por su clasificación basándose en los autores como Amado o García Gual. Sigue con el origen de la novela histórica y sus representantes destacados de varias partes del mundo, documentación de los géneros de la novela histórica a juicio de Lukács y el concepto de anacronismo según Prieto. Después de clasificar la novela el trabajo se centra, a base de la metodología del concepto de la novela histórica, en el análisis de El hereje que se ve desde el punto de vista religioso e histórico. Primero la religiosidad no aporta el plano importante del libro, pero durante la vida del protagonista, Cipriano Salcedo, se convierte en el plano más significativo que resulta en la muerte en la hoguera. Al final del trabajo se aporta la problemática de la religión en Espa?a del siglo XVI y la vista contemporánea a la Inquisición como tal. Después se presenta la comparación entre la realidad histórica y la historia expuesta en la novela considerando tanto los acontecimientos como a los personajes imprescindibles que forman el ambiente de El hereje. La tesina cierra con la peque?a ruta de El hereje por Valladolid con el mapa con los sitios turísticos más destacados.
