Roger Bacon's Reform of Education

Abstract:

Mezi osobnostmi scholastické filosofie vyniká Roger Bacon (1214-1292) jako snílek a vizionář. Cílem této disertační práce bylo představit Baconův osobitý a svébytně vystavěný komplex myšlenek, představ a nadějí ve světle jeho úsilí o uplatnění výchovných a vzdělavatelských cílů. Základním pramenem práce je 900stránkové Baconovo Opus maius (Větší dílo), datované lety 1266-1268, a některé další pramenné spisy. Toto dílo obsahuje sedm rozsáhlých oddílů věnovaných (I) metodologii, (II) filosofii a teologii, (III) propagaci studia cizích jazyků, (IV) matematice, geografii, astronomii a astrologii, (V) optice, (VI) experimentální vědě a (VII) morální filosofii. Své zkoumání jsem vymezil základní badatelskou otázkou a podotázkou: Jaké změny ve vzdělávání Roger Bacon navrhuje? Jaké vyjádření nalezly tyto změny v jeho Opus maius? Z povahy Baconova stylu plyne, že výsledkem je nástin úvah a představ o reformě vzdělávání. V Opus maius Bacon nejprve obhajuje a objasňuje svůj negativní postoj vůči stavu vědy. Navrhuje odstranit čtyři překážky, které svádějí vědce na scestí. Jsou to křehký příklad autorit, podléhání zvyklosti, nevzdělanost a zastírání vlastní nevědomosti. Poté se věnuje statusu filosofie a jejím vztahu k teologii. Osobitý příspěvek k řešení vztahu filosofie a teologie spočívá u Bacona v tom, že filosofie a teologie spolu koexistují v pozoruhodné symbióze. Dále se Bacon věnuje propagaci studia cizích jazyků. Latiníci (tj. v latině vzdělaní učenci) podle Bacona nápadně zaostávají za Araby a Židy. Baconova kritika ledabylých překladů Aristotela vstoupila do dějin (accidit error quasi in infinitis vocabulis). V další části navrhuje důkladné studium přírodních věd. Matematické, zeměpisné, astronomické a astrologické poznatky mají sloužit lepší srozumitelnosti Písma svatého. Totéž platí pro poznatky z optiky. Jedním z ústředních témat Baconovy filosofie je představení experimentální vědy (scientia experimentalis), badateli mylně interpretované jako předčasné dílo novověku. To, co Bacon chápe pod pojmem experientia, je třeba překládat jako pozorování, které je součástí dobového rodícího se přírodovědného zkoumání. Nakonec se Bacon zabývá studiem smyslu vědy. To jej přivádí k morální filosofii, kterou čerpá z jím objevených Senekových útěšných spisů. Vlastní nauku o morálce Bacon nevyvinul. Představil jsem mj. rovněž Baconovy životní osudy a poměrně silné eschatologické rysy jeho myšlení. Snažil jsem se ukázat Bacona jako vědce i pedagoga. Baconova filosofie působí jako solitérní výkon, našla ale následníky u renesančních myslitelů a humanistů. Bacon tak dostál vlastním vysokým nárokům a vstoupil do dějin filosofie jako významný propagátor antického dědictví a neúnavný kritik. Disertační práce poslouží interesovanému čtenáři jako úvod a pozvání ke studiu myšlenek a plánů jedné neobyčejné a dosud záhadné osobnosti středověké filosofie.

Abstract:

In the history of scholastics we meet only a few so curious personalities as medieval Franciscan monk Roger Bacon. In spite of certain attempt made in favor of his popularity (prominent is Umberto Eco’s novel Il nome della rosa) the proper research in this scientific field remains the domain of a closed circle of the philologists, historians of philosophy and students of semiotics, empirical science, methodology and medieval alchemy. Otherwise in the history Roger Bacon was mostly reckoned among the charlatans like count Cagliostro. The thesis Roger Bacon’s Reform of Education aims to present essential Bacon, an effort in reorganizing of the system of education with respect to natural sciences and moral cultivation. I am trying to see and to read the Opus maius (inclusive some very similar Bacon’s works: Opus minus, Opus tertium, Compendium studii philosophiae) focusing on Bacon’s scientific methodology, theological zeal and pedagogy. The body of my thesis consists of analysis of Bacon’s Opus maius, extensive work containing seven sections dealing with (I) methodology, (II) differences and congruencies of philosophy and theology, (III) grammar viewed both linguistically and universally, (IV) mathematics, geography, astronomy, (V) optics, (VI) experimental science and finally (VII) moral philosophy. It is important to say that the Opus maius is a large letter to pope Clement IV written in the years 1266-1268. The form of this work is designed as persuasio. The golden thread of my exposition is the persuasion that Opus maius is a concept of the reform of education which was never carried out but which is very important as one of pre-formation of later humanistic concept of education based on textual criticism, revaluation of antic heritage and importance of studies in natural philosophy. This all was done in favor of knowledge of bible and was led by the belief in close relation of science and morality as a fruit of all wise men’s activity and objective in salvation of human soul. It is commonly accepted attitude – which I share with scientist as L. Thorndike and J. Hackett – that Bacon is not some revolutionist of the medieval methodology; on the contrary his a very conservative thinker which puts its stock in the Aristotelian philosophy of nature and study of Saint Augustine. However, wide and profound basis of his knowledge allowed him to criticize some of his contemporaries (e.g. Albertus Magnus) for weak knowledge of the languages and to design (in very problematic way) his own so called scientia experimentalis. Bacon’s scientia experimentalis which is defined regrettably not so profoundly as one would wish has its origin probably in Arabic thought, in the optics of Alhazen. After presentation of Bacon’s life and times I divided central part of my thesis in five parts following more or less the structure of Opus maius. First part is analyzing section one and two as the key program of Bacon´s methodology. I am trying to point out famous four impediments and the problem of authority as in integral part of Bacon’s high acknowledgement of philosophy which ought to be very useful instrument for theology. However, to say that Bacon is one of those who were spreading the dictum philosophia ancilla theologiae would be inappropriate simplifying of the matter. Bacon tries to argue for greater usefulness of philosophy and understands in this way the symbiosis of philosophy and theology as a great value. Second part deals with famous propagation of studying of foreign languages. Bacon realized the bad command of foreign languages by the scholars was one of the serious causes of the state of knowledge in Europe. Bacon proposes the education in Hebrew and old Greek because these are the biblical languages. The knowledge of Arabic would be also desirable because of the texts of various Aristotelian commentators although Bacon probably was not familiar with Arabic. ommand of various foreign languages as an equipment of missionary and so he stays very near to Raimundus Lullus. Third part contains arguments proposing an education of natural sciences. It concerns mathematics, optics, geography and astrology/astronomy in section four and optics in section five of Opus maius. Special focus is given on mathematics which is characterized as porta et clavis scientiarum, gate and key to the human and divine sciences. The whole section dealing with optics (perspectiva) is crowned by adoration of this science and its usefulness for biblical studies. Fourth part contains the presentation of scientia experimentalis. The gist of this doctrine is a pointing out three prerogatives creating this science relative of mathematics. The connection with military praxis is rather supposed than clearly explained. The true experimentator is kind of mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse who legendary set on fire a roman ships with burning mirrors. Finally the fifth part is dedicated to explanation of Bacon’s moral philosophy. This last seventh section of Opus maius is composed of several long excerpts from Seneca and Cicero. Bacon was fascinated by ethics of late stoicism and he has been propagating this peaceful and restraint radiating philosophy as intellectual manual of Christian way of life. I discussed a few peculiarities of Bacon’s reform as the contradiction of designing peaceful progress of humanity together with military ambitions of Christian science. Another theme was an attitude to magic. Many of these problems are terminological ones. It is not true that Bacon was a solitary unit. His thoughts were imitated and he was imitating or adopting the thoughts of Arabian scientists Alhazen and Alkindi. It is also apparent that Bacon’s interest was to study the sciences with respect to utility and the utility is comprehended as service to the study of the bible. Why precisely the bible? It could be seen as a sign of piety. But Bacon is inwardly convinced that Antichrist is coming soon. I believe to underline eschatological influence of Joachim of Fiore’s line of his thought could be one of the contributions of my thesis.
