The Portrayal of the New Negro in the Poetry of the Harlem Renaissance

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je zabývat se Harlemskou renesancí, afroamerickým hnutím ve 20. a 30. letech 20. století ve Spojených státech, a její poezií. Mým úkolem bude tuto poezii analyzovat, srovnat ji z několika hledisek a především podat, na základě básní nejdůležitějších autorů, zobrazení tzv. nového černocha. V úvodní kapitole práce se čtenář seznámí s definicí Harlemské renesance a jejím literárním, politickým a kulturním pozadím. Druhá kapitola se za pomoci eseje Alaina Locka snaží nastínit koncept nového černocha, v následujících kapitolách jsou rozebírány a srovnávány básně nejvýznamnějším básníků daného období se zaměřením na poezii Langstona Hughese. Závěrečná kapitola je věnována poezii žen. Závěr shrnuje poznatky a snaží se sjednotit koncept nového černocha, jak byl popsán Harlemskými básníky.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to deal with the Harlem Renaissance, African American movement in the 1920s and 1930s in the United States, and its poetry. My objective will be to analyse the poetry, compare it from various points of view and mainly reflect the portrayal of the New Negro based on the poems written by the most important authors. In the first chapter of my thesis, the reader will learn about the definition of the Harlem Renaissance and its literary, political and cultural background. The second chapter is based on Alain Locke?s essay ?The New Negro? and deals with the concept of the New Negro. The following chapters then deal with the analysis and comparison of the poems by the most important poets of the period. I concentrated on the poetry of Langston Hughes. Last chapter is dedicated to the poetry of women authors. The conclusion summarizes the information and tries to present the concept of the New Negro as it was reflected by the Harlem poets.
