Microscopic Gauge-invariant Theory of the c-axis Infrared Response of Bilayer High-Tc Cuprate Superconductors

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá teoretickým popisem optické odezvy vysokoteplotních kuprátových supravodičů v daleké infračervené oblasti. Důraz je kladen na kalibrační invariantnost teorie, která těsně souvisí s kontinuitou náboje. Zabýváme se optickou vodivostí pro záření polarizované v kuprátových rovinách i pro záření polarizované kolmo na roviny ve směru osy c. V prvním případě zkoumáme roli vertexových oprav, které jsou kvůli své náročnosti ve většině současných výpočtů vynechávány. Ve druhém případě je hlavním cílem interpretace experimentálních spekter za pomoci vhodně navrženého mikroskopického modelu. Soustředíme se přitom na kuprátové supravodiče se dvěma blízkými kuprátovými rovinami v primitivní buňce. Klíčovými prvky modelu jsou: (i) Dva pásy rozštěpené díky interakci v rámci páru blízkých kuprátových rovin. Kvazičástice těchto pásů jsou renormalizované interakcí se spinovými fluktuacemi. (ii) Efekty lokálního pole spojené s akumulací náboje na kuprátových rovinách. (iii) Vertexové korekce zajišťující kalibrační invariantnost teorie. (iv) Slabá vazba mezi páry blízkých kuprátových rovin. Je proveden detailní rozbor optické odezvy vycházející z tohoto modelu a navržena interpretace dvou maxim, která se v naměřených spektrech reálné části optické vodivosti objevují při přechodu do supravodivého stavu. Maximum nacházející se okolo 400/cm je přiřazeno módu, který pochází z oblasti mezi blízkými kuprátovými rovinami a je analogií Bogoljubovova-Andersonova módu. Maximum poblíž 1000/cm je přiřazeno k excitovaným stavům obsahujícím dvě Bogoljubovovy kvazičástice z různých párů rovin.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with a theoretical description of the far-infrared optical response of the high-temperature cuprate superconductors. The emphasis is put on the gauge-invariance of the theory, which is intimately related to the charge continuity. Both the in-plane optical conductivity as well as the c-axis response are studied. In the first case we study the role of the vertex corrections, which are omitted in most of the present calculations because of their complexity. The main objective in the latter case is the interpretation of the c-axis experimental spectra in terms of a properly designed microscopic model. We focus on the so-called bilayer cuprates with two closely spaced copper-oxygen planes in a unit cell. The key ingredients of the model are: (i) two bilayer-split bands renormalized by the coupling to spin fluctuations, (ii) local field effects due to charges accumulating at the copper-oxygen planes, (iii) vertex corrections ensuring the gauge-invariance of the theory, and (iv) a weak coupling between the bilayers. The optical response resulting from this model is studied in detail and an interpretation of two superconductivity-induced peaks in the experimental data of the real part of the c-axis conductivity is proposed. The peak located around 400/cm is attributed to a collective mode of the bilayer regions that is an analogue of the Bogolyubov-Anderson mode. The peak at ca 1000/cm is interpreted as a pair-breaking peak that is related to the coupling through the spacing layers separating the bilayers.
