Fear and its reflexion in the Ancient Thought

Abstract:

Strach od nepaměti ovlivňuje lidské myšlení a jednání. Přesto jeho reflexi v antických filosofických textech nebyla dosud věnována patřičná pozornost. Tato práce proto mapuje výskyt tohoto fenoménu u nejstarších antických myslitelů. Strach je nejprve představen jako afekt, na který lze nahlížet až osmi různými pohledy. Na základě dostupných pramenů jsou dle této metodiky následně zkoumány texty antických myslitelů s důrazem na dílo Platóna a Aristotela. Zmíněni jsou však i vybraní předsókratici, kteří se o strachu doložitelně zmiňují. Práce se také snaží ukázat, v jakých kontextech uvažování o strachu v antice probíhá.

Abstract:

Fear influences human thought and behavior for ages. Nevertheless not enough attention was drawn to its reflection in ancient philosophical texts. Therefore this thesis offers a survey of this phenomenon in thinking of oldest philosophers. Fear is first of all introduced as an affect, which can be observed from eight different points of view. After that concrete available texts and sources are examined with a special focus on the works of Plato and Aristotle. But several presocratics, who mention fear in their texts or statements, are also simultaneously presented. The thesis also tries to show various contexts of ancient philosophical thinking about fear.
