Translating Children's Narrative Voices in Adult Fiction

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá překladem postav dětských vypravěčů v próze určené dospělým čtenářům. Metodou komparativní analýzy dvou anglicky psaných románů a jejich českých překladů práce mapuje přístupy a řešení překladatelek Veroniky Volhejnové a Jarky Stuchlíkové. Zatímco v první knize Pokoj vystupuje postava ich-vypravěče Jacka, který je zároveň hlavní postavou románu, Chlapec v pruhovaném pyžamu je vyprávěn ve třetí osobě a fokalizován prostřednictvím hlavního hrdiny Bruna. Zjištěná pozorování jsou roztříděna do podkapitol podle příbuznosti a v závěru jsou zobecněna do podoby několika doporučení. Téma doplňuje překlad úryvku z románu Right behind You od americké autorky Gail Gilesové, který je svým charakterem srovnatelný s analyzovanými romány a nebyl dosud přeložen do češtiny.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on how to translate child narrators in adult novels. Two English novels and their respective Czech translations were selected to examine how the translators Veronika Volhejnová and Jarka Stuchlíková had rendered the particular child narrators there and what translation approaches they had adopted. The carried out comparative analyses present translation solutions and shifts related to the same or similar language and text matters. The first novel Room employs the first-person narrator Jack who is also the main character, while the second novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a third-person narrative which focalises the protagonist Bruno. The conclusion provides a general set of recommendations that has been taken into account in a translation of an excerpt from a novel Right behind You by Gail Giles, a comparable piece of literature to the analysed novels which has not been translated to Czech yet.
