Modeling learning in problem solving

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá měřením a modelováním efektu učení při řešení problémů v inteligentních vzdělávacích systémech. Lze přirozeně předpokládat, že se uživatelé systému zlepšují, otázkou je, jaké má toto zlepšení charakter. Práce nejdříve shrnuje relevantní výzkum lidského učení, jako například teorii učících křivek či tzv. Bayesian knowledge tracing. S použitím těchto poznatků navrhujeme několik modelů pro vzdělávací online systém Poblem solving Tutor postihujících efekt učení. Narozdíl od většiny inteligentních vzdělávacích systémů jsme nuceni pracovat s řešitelskými časy jednotlivých úloh namísto korektnosti odpovědí. Reálná data ze systému, stejně jako data uměle syntetizovaná, jsou použita pro analýzu parametrů modelů a zhodnocení jejich výhod a nevýhod.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the measuring and modeling students' learning in intelligent tutoring systems (ITS). We naturally assume that students of an ITS are improving their specific skills and we study the character of this improvement. First of all, the thesis provides a summary of relevant techniques and theories addressing human learning, such as the theory of learning curves or the Bayesian knowledge tracing. Using that knowledge we propose several models which capture learning in data of Problem solving Tutor, a web-based educational tool for learning through problem solving. Unlike the majority of intelligent tutoring systems, Tutor problems are not short tasks with correct and incorrect answers. The system contains various logic puzzles and educational problems and therefore records solving times instead of a number of errors. Using both synthesized and real data we evaluate the proposed models, analyze parameter values and parameter estimation techniques and finally discuss their advantages and disadvantages.
