The influence of media in international relations after the establishment of the CNN news channel: a case study of the Arab Spring

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá, na případě arabského jara v Libyi a Jemenu, analýzou vlivu televizní stanice CNN na zahraniční politiku USA. Práce vychází z teorie CNN efektu, reflektující významnost médií v diplomacii, který je popsán v první části práce. Druhá část práce se zaměřuje na arabské jaro ve vybraných státech (Libye a Jemen), k jejichž analýze je použita metoda obsahové analýzy. Prostřednictvím zvolené metody je zkoumáno, zda lze prokázat vliv CNN efektu na zahraniční politiku USA a tím i významnost médií v diplomacii. Cílem práce je tedy konkrétně zodpovězení výzkumné otázky „Jaký vliv mělo zpravodajské pokrytí arabského jara televizní stanicí CNN na americkou politikou vůči těmto událostem ve vybraných zemích?”. Na základě provedené analýzy byl prokázán vliv CNN efektu na zahraniční politiku USA pouze u případu arabského jara v Libyi. Zásadním zjištěním práce bylo to, že kategorie, u nichž došlo k prokázání CNN efektu, byly především ty, které měly přímý dopad na dění v místě sledovatelů, tedy v Americe. Nelze tedy vyloučit schopnost televizní stanice CNN ovlivnit americkou politiku, ale jistě se již nejedná o natolik jednoznačný a častý jev.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis examines the influence of CNN on U.S. foreign policy, using the Arab Spring in Libya and Yemen as a case study. The work is based on the theory of the CNN effect, reflecting the importance of media in diplomacy, which is described in the first part of the thesis. The second part of the thesis focuses on the Arab Spring in selected countries (Libya and Yemen), for which the content analysis method is used. Through the chosen method, it is examined whether the influence of the CNN effect on U.S. foreign policy and thus the relevance of the media in diplomacy can be demonstrated. The aim of the thesis is specifically to answer the following research question "What effect did CNN's coverage of the Arab Spring have on U.S. policy towards these events in the selected countries?". Based on the analysis conducted, the influence of the CNN effect on U.S. foreign policy was demonstrated only for the case of the Arab Spring in Libya. A key finding of the thesis was that the categories for which there was a demonstration of the CNN effect were primarily those that had a direct impact on events in the place of the observers, i.e., America. Thus, CNN's ability to influence American politics cannot be ruled out, but it is certainly no longer such a clear and frequent phenomenon.
