(Re)connecting the Caribbean-American Diaspora in American Literature

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the representation of the Caribbean-American diaspora in American literature. The theoretical part briefly outlines the historical development of the Caribbean region and Caribbean islands of the writers' origin, their lives and works. Further the term diaspora is defined and the principles and basic terms of the postcolonial literary criticism are introduced. In analytical part the thesis focuses on the representation of the cultural conflicts in the Caribbean-American diaspora. It analyzes three novels of the Caribbean-American writers Edwidge Danticat (Breath, Eyes, Memory), Cristina García (Dreaming in Cuban), and Jamaica Kincaid (Lucy) from the perspective of postcolonial literary criticism.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá zobrazením karibsko-americké diaspory v americké literatuře. V teoretické části je stručně nastíněn vývoj Karibiku a karibských ostrovů, z nichž autorky pocházejí a život a díla autorek. Dále je definován pojem diaspora a jsou uvedeny principy a základní termíny postkoloniální literární kritiky. V analytické části se práce zaměřuje na zobrazení kulturních střetů v karibsko-americké diaspoře. Práce analyzuje tři romány karibsko-amerických autorek - Edwidge Danticat (Breath, Eyes, Memory), Cristiny Garcíi (Dreaming in Cuban) a Jamaicy Kincaid (Lucy) z pohledu postkoloniální literární kritiky.
