Life and work of Irena Brežná

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to introduce the life and work of Irena Brežná, a writer and journalist who emigrated with her family in 1968 from Slovakia to Switzerland. This paper focuses on her relationship to German as a language, that enabled her to live in emigration as well as to become a successful writer. The thesis provides an overview of Brežná's works and topics she uses. Thanks to emigration, Brežná was able to meet new cultures, compare them, think about them and unveil things that remain hidden to people living in only one cultural environment. In spite of being Slovak, she chose German as her literary language to write about various topics including herself. Significant part of the thesis is dedicated to an analysis of Brežná's first novel The Best of All Worlds, which contains authobigraphical features. Last few chapters of the thesis present the noveľs acceptance in the German-speaking countries, the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je představit život a dílo spisovatelky a novinářky Ireny Brežné, která v roce 1968 se svou rodinou emigrovala ze Slovenska do Švýcarska. Práce je zaměřena na její vztah k němčině jako jazyku, který ji umožnil život v emigraci a její spisovatelskou práci, ve kterých dosahuje značných úspěchů. Diplomová práce přináší přehled její tvorby a témat, která se v jejích dílech objevují. Emigrace jí umožnila seznamovat se s různými kulturami, porovnávat je, přemýšlet o nich a odkrývat to, co jiným lidem žijícím pouze v jednom kulturním prostředí, zůstává skryté. Pro svou literární tvorbu si, ač Slovenka, zvolila němčinu, díky které píše o různých tématech i o sobě samé. Podstatnou část této práce tvoří analýza románu Nejlepší ze všech světů, který obsahuje autobiografické prvky a je jejím prvním románem. V posledních kapitolách diplomové práce jsou uvedeny ohlasy na tento úspěšný román v německy hovořících zemích, na Slovensku a v České republice.
