New media as a tool to fulfil the artistic visions of television

Abstract:

Předkládaná magisterská práce pojednává o postupném vývoji masového média televize a zkoumá naplnění vizí mediálních teoretiků. Nejprve byla hodnocena jako manipulativní a divácky pasivní, především teoretiky Neilem Postmanem, Guyem Debordem či Pierrem Bourdieuem. Oproti nim teoretici jako Lev Manovich, Jeremy Orlebar, Don Tapscott a Axel Bruns, charakterizovali nová média, zahrnující digitální televizi, jako síťová a interaktivní. V práci si autorka klade otázku, zda a do jaké míry byly naplněny vize a očekávání umělců a teoretiků spojené s médiem televize v prostředí nových médií. Pracovní hypotézou je, že řadu uměleckých ambicí se podařilo uskutečnit až s příchodem nových digitálních a interaktivních médií. Argumentace bude postavena na příkladech práce České televize.

Abstract:

The presented thesis deals with the gradual development of mass media television and examines the fulfillment of the visions of media theorists. At first it was rated manipulative and passive from viewer's perspective., especially by theorists Neil Postman, Guy Debord and Pierre Bourdieu. In contrast, theorists such as Lev Manovich, Jeremy Orlebar, Don Tapscott and Axel Bruns characterized new media, including digital television, as network and interactive. In her work, the author wonders whether and to what extent the visions and expectations of artists and theorists associated with the media of television in the environment of new media have been fulfilled. The working hypothesis is that a number of ambitions have only been achieved with the advent of new digital and interactive media. The argument will be based on examples of the work of Česká televize.
