The Principles of Organicist Metaphysics

Abstract:

Disertační práce se skládá ve své podstatě ze šesti rovnocenných kapitol, jejichž jednotícím tématem jo otázka principů tzv. „organicistní metafyziky“, jak byla původně budována Alfredem North Whiteheadem. Tato práce není čistě interpretativní a dává tak spíše důraz na celkovou intelektuální perspektivu tohoto pojetí světa v kontextu poznatků moderní vědy. Práce se především snaží odpovědět na otázku, jaké kategorie popisu přírody by bylo dobré zaměstnat, pokud chceme získat metafyzicky koherentní koncept světa. První kapitola Proces a spojení nás informuje o základní kategorizaci procesů utvářejících existující věci. Dále je učiněn pokus vysvětlit možnost spojení těchto věcí. Nakonec je z Whiteheadových pozic kritizován koncept „nutného spojení“, jak byl představen Davidem Humem. Druhá kapitola Princip relativity zkoumá skryté ontologické problémy, které vyplývají z einsteinovské interpretace principu. Jedná se o problém redukce fyzikálního působení na časoprostorovou transformaci vztahů mezi událostmi. Whiteheadova a Poincarého kritika Einsteinovy intepretace tvoří základ kapitoly. Dovozujeme, že princip relativity paradoxně předpokládá absolutní charakteristiky časoprostorových vztahů, stejně jako absolutní charakteristiky působících fyzikálních entit. Třetí kapitola Nevratnost se týká problému asymetrie vývoje událostí, kterou lidově nazýváme „nevratností času“. Jsou zmíněny slavné myšlenkové experimenty fyziků, které podporují principy mechanicismu a naznačují, že nevratnost není nutný fyzikální proces. Argumentuji proti tomuto pojetí a navrhuji určité ontologické podmínky, které by nevratnost mohly vysvětlovat. Čtvrtá kapitola Hierarchie a sítě je zaměřena na vyjasnění zdánlivě rozporného vztahu mezi modelem hierarchického uspořádání přírody a modelu síťového uspořádání. Je argumentováno ve prospěch jejich vzájemné a nutné komplementarity. Systémové teorie, které útočí na esencialismus vyjadřovaný metaforou hierarchického uspořádání reality, tak nemají pravdu. Pátá kapitola Komplexita zavádí novou kategorii, která se ukazuje jako čím dál tím méně postradatelná pro korektní popis přírody. Jako stěžejní se zde jeví vztah pojmů logické hloubky, efektivní komplexity a AIC (algorithmic information content) ve vztahu zejména k entitám utvářeným biologickou evolucí. Šestá kapitola Význam formuluje nejprve metafyzické podmínky existence významu. Poté je představena Dennettova věž vysvětlující genezi významu v průběhu biologické evoluce. Nakonec je konfrontováno pojetí možnosti významu v rámci kybernetického funkcionalismu a biologického naturalismu, přičemž jsou obě pojetí podrobena kritice.

Abstract:

The dissertation consists in essence of six equivalent chapters, whose unifying theme is the question of the principles of "organicist metaphysics," as it was originally built by Alfred North Whitehead. This work is not purely interpretative and gives more emphasis on the overall perspective of the intellectual conception of the world in the context of the findings of modern science. Working primarily seeks to answer the question of what categories the description of nature would be a good idea to employ if we want to get metaphysically coherent concept of the world. The first chapter – Process and Connections informs us of the fundamental processes categorization shaping the existing things. Furthermore, an attempt is made to explain the possibility of merging these things. Finally, the concept of "necessary connection" is criticized from Whitehead's positions , as presented by David Hume. The second chapter Principles of Relativity examines the hidden ontological problems arising from the Einsteinian interpretation of the principle. It is a problem of reduction of physical effects on space-time transformation of relations between events. Whitehead's and Poincaré‘s criticism of Einstein’s intepretation form the basis of chapter. It is concluded that the principle of relativity paradoxically assumes the absolute characteristics of the spatio-temporal relations, as well as the absolute characteristics of the underlying physical entities. The third chapter Irreversibility concerns the problem of asymmetry of development of events, which are popularly called "irreversibility of time." There are the famous physicists‘ thought experiments mentioned which are supporting the mechanicism principles and suggesting that irreversibility is not necessary physical process. I argue against this concept and propose specific ontological conditions that could explain irreversibility. The fourth chapter Hierarchy and Network is aimed at clarifying the seemingly contradictory relationship between the model of the hierarchical structure of nature and the model of network configurations. It is argued in favor of their mutual and necessary complementarity. System theories attacking essentialism expressed by metaphor hierarchical arrangement of reality, are thus wrong. The fifth chapter Complexity introduces a new category, which is proving to be increasingly less dispensable for the correct description of nature. As key issue here seems to be logical relationship of terms of depth, efficient complexity and AIC (algorithmic information content) in relation particularly to entities formed by biological evolution. The sixth chapter Meaning formulates the importance of metaphysical conditions of meaning existence first. After that, the Dennett's tower explaining the genesis of meaning in the course of biological evolution is presented. Finally, there are the possibilities of meaning in the concepts of the cybernetic functionalism and biological naturalism confronted, and both of these concepts are criticized.
