Tough guys and gentle women: Masculinity and femininity of characters in online role-playing games

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá performováním maskulinity a feminity v online textových role-playingových hrách fantastického žánru, které jsou hrané na českém serveru Abarin. Hráči jsou nahlíženi jako členové subkultury specifické svou konzumací žánrových textů a jako představitelé tzv. rozptýleného publika. Cílem práce je nalézt v herních příspěvcích strategie konformity nebo subverze vůči dominantním konvencím týkajících se genderu. Práce využívá konceptů hegemonní maskulinity R. Connell, genderového univerza S. Harding a feministické kritiky mediálních reprezentací. Při pojetí genderu vychází z teorie performativity J. Butler. Při popisu hráčských zkušeností využívá teorie hraní rolí E. Goffmana, kulturního kapitálu P. Bourdieu a typologie her R. Caillois. Zvolený metodologický přístup je kvalitativní a zvolenými metodami jsou diskurzivní a narativní analýza čtyř odehraných her. V herních performancích byla nalezena převažující konformita s dominantními genderovými konvencemi, kterou se autorka pokouší vysvětlit týmovou interakcí při tvorbě kolektivní narace a narůstající spektakularizací a performativitou rozptýlených publik.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with performing of masculinity and femininity in online textual role-playing games of fantasy and science fiction genre, which are being played on Czech server Abarin. The players are considered as members of a specific subculture, consumers of genre texts and representatives of so called diffused audience. The aim of the thesis is to look at their game posts and to find strategies of conformity with or subversion of dominant gender conventions. The thesis uses R. Connell’s concept of hegemonic masculinity, S. Harding’s concept of gendered universe and it adopts perspective of feminist media criticism. Central for conceptualizing gender is J. Butler’s theory of performativity. Additionally, when describing the players’ experience, the thesis draws upon theories of E. Goffman, P. Bourdieu and R. Caillois. The chosen approach is a qualitative one that uses methods of discourse and narrative analysis to analyse four selected games. In the players’ performances, there was found a conformity with dominant gender conventions. The author is trying to explain this by the team and collective character of the production of game narration and by trends of increasing spectacularization and performativity of diffused audiences.
