High-tech urban agriculture as a part of sustainable city

Abstract:

Global challenges of growing population, land scarcity, climate change, etc. led to the rise of high-tech urban agriculture with a vertical structure. Compared to conventional agriculture, high-tech urban agriculture is more efficient way of producing crops, especially in terms of space and water usage. High-tech agriculture provides a way to grow crops throughout the year without the impact of weather and climate change. The aim of the diploma thesis was to identify challenging factors of high-tech urban agriculture sustainability. The most important negative factor is the high production of greenhouse gas emissions caused by the high energy consumption associated with the energy from non-renewable sources. The current financial and energy inefficiency enables vertical farms to grow only leafy greens, and thus this method of agriculture cannot provide food security. In view of the current potential of the evolving industry, global challenges cannot be addressed with existing high-tech agriculture yet and its sustainability is questionable.

Abstract:

Globálne problémy narastajúcej populácie, nedostatku pôdy, klimatických zmien atď. viedli k vzniku high-tech mestského poľnohospodárstva s vertikálnou štruktúrou. High-tech mestské poľnohospodárstvo predstavuje v porovnaní s konvenčným poľnohospodárstvom efektívnejší spôsob produkcie plodín najmä z hľadiska využitej plochy a vody. High-tech poľnohospodárstvo predstavuje možnosť pestovať plodiny počas celého roka bez vplyvu poveternostných podmienok a klimatických zmien. Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce bolo identifikovať rizikové faktory z hľadiska udržateľnosti high-tech mestského poľnohospodárstva. Najdôležitejším negatívnym aspektom je vysoká produkcia skleníkových plynov spôsobená vysokou energetickou spotrebou spojenou s čerpaním energie z neobnoviteľných zdrojov. Vzhľadom na aktuálne finančné a energetické možnosti je prostredníctvom vertikálnych fariem možné pestovať viac-menej iba listovú zeleninu a teda tento spôsob poľnohospodárstva nedokáže potravinovo zabezpečiť urbánne prostredie. Vzhľadom na súčasne možnosti vyvíjajúceho sa priemyslu, je riešenie globálnych problémov high-tech poľnohospodárstvom zatiaľ vzdialené a jeho udržateľnosť je sporná.
