Abstract:

Ústředním tématem bakalářské práce je vliv bilingvismu na pracovní paměť. Vycházíme z předpokladu, že jestliže má bilingvismus průkazně kladný vliv na exekutivní funkce, měla by tato bilingvní výhoda figurovat i v rámci pracovní paměti, která pod exekutivní funkce spadá. Dosavadní výsledky výzkumů zabývající se korelací mezi bilingvismem a pracovní pamětí jsou poměrně rozporuplné. Pro účely výzkumu jsme použili metodu n-back na měření kapacity pracovní paměti. Teoretická část bakalářské práce nejdříve představuje pojem bilingvismus - obeznamuje čtenáře s jeho klady a pozitivními přínosy, ale také potenciálními negativy. V podkapitole pojednávající o dělení bilingvismu rozvádíme a zároveň srovnáváme druhy bilingvismu - konkrétně simultánní a sukcesivní bilingvismus. Následuje část věnující se konceptu pracovní paměti. V této kapitole začínáme od historie pojímání pracovní paměti, vysvětlujeme, co si pod tímto pojmem můžeme konkrétně představit, a kapitolu uzavíráme popisem nejpopulárnějšího modelu pracovní paměti od Baddeleyho a Hitche. Poslední kapitola v teoretické části práce shrnuje dosavadní výsledky výzkumů zabývajících se vztahem mezi bilingvismem a pracovní pamětí. Hlavním cílem výzkumné části je prozkoumat a popsat možné rozdíly v pracovní paměti u bilingvistů a monolingvistů, s rozšířením o některé další aspekty, které zde mohou hrát podstatnou roli. Mezi tyto vybrané aspekty řadíme věk osvojení dalšího jazyka participantů, pohlaví a úroveň vzdělání. Dospěli jsme ke zjištění, že bilingvní skupina vykazuje o něco lepší výsledky v úloze n-back, než skupina monolingvní. Muži si v našem výzkumu vedli o něco lépe, než ženy. Abstract:

The central theme of our bachelor thesis is the effect of bilingualism on working memory. We start from the assumption that if bilingualism has a conclusive positive effect on executive functions, this bilingual advantage should also figure in working memory, which falls under executive functions. The results of research to date on the correlation between bilingualism and working memory have been quite inconsistent. For our research, we used the n-back method to measure working memory capacity. The theoretical part of our undergraduate thesis first introduces the concept of bilingualism - familiarizing the reader with its pros and positive benefits, as well as its potential negatives. In the subsection dealing with the divisions of bilingualism, we elaborate and also compare the types of bilingualism - namely simultaneous and successive bilingualism. This is followed by a section on the concept of working memory. In this section, we start from the history of the concept of working memory, explain what we can specifically imagine by this concept, and conclude the chapter with a description of the most popular model of working memory by Baddeley and Hitch. The last chapter in the theoretical part of the thesis summarizes the results of previous research on the relationship between bilingualism and working memory. The main aim of the research part is to explore and describe possible differences in working memory between bilinguals and monolinguals, with an extension to some other aspects that may play a significant role here. These selected aspects include the age of acquisition of the participants' additional language, gender, and level of education. We conclude that the bilingual group performs slightly better on the n-back task than the monolingual group. Males performed slightly better than females in our research. The level of education also has a positive effect on performance in the n-back test.
