Implementation of new research findings into clinical nursing practice in intensive care units

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on the research of translation of new scientific knowledge into nursing practice in intensive care environment. Its theoretical part describes the intensive care units, deals with Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and its phases, importance and the education in EBP together with nurses' resistance to change. Qualitative study design was chosen using semi-structured interview for the empirical part. This work examined the awareness of nurses about EBP, the way of acquiring new scientific knowledge and the relation of nurses to their implementation into practice. We have found that nurses, thanks to their school education, have a certain awareness of EBP, they gain scientific knowledge mainly from working educational events and evaluate the implementation mostly positively. For the future, it would be useful to extend the training activities to include EBP, remove the implementation barriers, lead and motivate nurses to actively search for and use recent scientific knowledge in practice.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca skúma problematiku implementácie nových vedeckých poznatkov do ošetrovateľskej praxe v prostredí intenzívnej starostlivosti. Teoretická časť charakterizuje oddelenie intenzívnej medicíny, pojednáva o praxi založenej na dôkazoch (EBP), jej fázach, význame, ako aj vyučovaní EBP a rezistencii sestier voči zmene. Pre empirickú časť bol zvolený kvalitatívny design pomocou pološtruktúrovaného rozhovoru. Práca zisťovala povedomie všeobecných sestier o EBP, spôsob získavania nových vedeckých poznatkov a vzťah sestier k ich implementácii do praxe. Zistili sme, že všeobecné sestry vďaka vzdelávaniu na školách určité povedomie o EBP majú, vedecké poznatky získavajú hlavne z pracovných vzdelávacích akcií a implementáciu hodnotia prevažne kladne. Do budúcna by bolo vhodné rozšíriť vzdelávacie akcie o EBP, odstrániť bariéry implementácie, viesť a motivovať sestry k aktívnemu vyhľadávaniu a využívaniu vedeckých poznatkov v praxi.
