Learning styles and academic success among high school students

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je prozkoumání učebních stylů a učebních přístupů, které se vyskytují u studentů třetích ročníků střední školy. Výzkum byl zaměřen na projevy učebních stylů v předmětu Základy společenských věd. Důraz byl kladen na vztah těchto učebních stylů ke školní úspěšnosti studenta. Za tímto účelem byl proveden hloubkový rozhovor se dvěma skupinami studentů - skupinou úspěšných studentů a jejich méně úspěšných spolužáků. Tito studenti také vyplňovali Inventář studijních stylů J. D. Vermunta, jehož výsledky přispěly k pochopení některých rozdílů mezi skupinami. Výsledkem je nelineární model faktorů, které ovlivňují učební styly a učební přístupy u zkoumaných studentů. Vztahy mezi jednotlivými faktory jsou popsány a jsou zmíněna klíčová místa, která hrají roli ve vztahu ke školnímu úspěchu. Teoretická část práce shrnuje dosavadní výzkum v oblasti a vymezuje pojetí učebních stylů, které je používáno v empirické části.

Abstract:

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to explore the learning styles and approaches to learning, as they are present among students at third year in the high school. The research was focused on the demonstration of learning styles in subject called Basics of Social Sciences. An emphasis was put on the relations between learning styles and academic success. To fulfil this goal the in-depth interview was conducted with two groups of students – with the group of high-achieving students and with the group of their less successful classmates. These students also filled the Inventory of Learning Styles created by J. D. Vermunt. The results of this questionnaire were helpful in terms of understanding certain differences between groups. The output of the study is a non-linear model of factors, which are influencing the learning styles and approaches to learning among researched students. The relations between different factors are described and an emphasis is given on key points, which are influencing the academic success. The theoretical part of the study compiles the existing research in the area and defines the understanding of learning styles concept, as it is used in the empirical part of the study.
