Effectiveness of web applications communication

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá efektivností komunikace mezi serverovou a klientskou částí webové aplikace. Kromě teoretického shrnutí technologií aktuálně využívaných v komplexních webových aplikacích se věnuje způsobům komunikace ve smyslu výměny dat pomocí rozhraní REST a GraphQL a pomocí experimentů na datových modelech implementovaných pomocí frameworku Spring Boot zhodnocuje, v jakých situacích je které rozhraní vhodnější pro praktické použití. V kontextu implementovaných modelů bylo mimo jiné zjištěno, že ač je GraphQL dynamičtější a odolnější vůči jednodušším změnám požadavků, jeho výkonnostní stránka za REST API pokulhává a stejně tak na tom je i počáteční implementace či implementace složitějších změn.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the effectiveness of communication between the server side and the client side of a web application. In addition to a theoretical summary of technologies currently used in complex web applications, it describes ways of communicating in the sense of data exchange using REST and GraphQL APIs and uses experiments on data models implemented using the Spring Boot framework to evaluate the practical usability of these interfaces in different situations. In the context of the implementation, it was concluded that although GraphQL is more dynamic and more resistant to simpler requirement changes, its performance side, as well as the complexity of initial implementation or implementation of more complex changes, lags behind REST API.
