Public sociology according to Michael Burawoy

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce řeší problematiku relevance angažované sociologie v 21. století. V práci je důkladně analyzován koncept angažované sociologie v pojetí nejznámějšího zástupce Michaela Burawoye z díla For Public Sociology (2005). Hlavní výzkumnou otázkou práce je: Proč je angažovaná sociologie Michela Burawoye odmítána/podporována ve celosvětové akademické sféře sociologie? Cílem práce je z akademické diskuze vytvořit přehled reakcí na toto dílo a syntetizovat ho do specifických kategorií a představit hlavní argumenty proč je angažovaná sociologie přijímaná nebo odmítaná. Výsledky analýzy diskuze ukazují, že nejčastější argumenty odmítající Burawoyovo pojetí jsou: neadekvátní metodologie při tvorbě druhů sociologie a vztahů mezi nimi, neúplná a nevhodná argumentace, přílišná angažovanost a zaujatost vytváří chybnou interpretaci reality, ztráta kredibility sociologie ve společnosti kvůli nerealizaci hodnotově neutrálních výzkumů, přehlížení jiných způsobů realizace sociologie kvůli zaslepení západním stylem sociologie. Mezi podporující argumenty patří: přesný popis měnící se reality sociologa, otevřený dialog s publiky, reflexe nad směřováním sociologie, synergie a spolupráce mezi čtyřmi druhy sociologie, cílem sociologa je být prospěšný společnosti.

Abstract:

In thesis we deal with issue of relevancy of public sociology in 21th century. Author is analyzing the Michael Burawoy´s concept of public sociology. Michael Burawoy is well known sociologists and his concept has been published in article called For Public Sociology (2005). The main research question is: Why is Michael Burawoy´s concept of public sociology supported/rejected in global academy of sociology. The main goal of thesis is to create the summary of recent discussion of academy and then to present the main arguments why is Burawoy´s public sociology supported or rejected. The result of discussion analysis shows that the most frequent arguments of rejecting are: inappropriate methodology in process of creation of types of sociology and in process of revealing of relationships between them, incomplete and inadequate argumentation, excessive involvement and committment creates biased interpretation of social reality, a loss of sociology´s credibility in society due not implementing the value neutral science, ignoring of the other ways of doing sociology due understanding of sociology in terms of its western style. The most supportive arguments are: precise description of new reality of sociologist, dialogue with publics, reflection onto direction of sociology, synergy and cooperation between four types of sociology, the goal of sociologist is to be useful to society.
