Zora Neale Hurston as Both a Novelist and a Folklorist

Anotace:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá syntézu dvou oblastí, folklóru a literatury, kterými se Zora Neale Hurstonová zabývala a jež aplikovala ve svých románech Jonah‘s Gourd Vine a Their Eyes Were Watching God. Hlavní argument této práce je, že z dnešního pohledu by tyto romány mohly být považované za příklady postmoderní etnografie. V úvodu je čtenář obeznámen se současnou teorií v oblasti etnografie a literatury, s definicí postmoderní etnografie a s přehodnocením Hurstonové a jejích spisovatelských aktivit v rámci tohoto diskurzu. Dále nasleduje podrobná analýza hlavních úrovní textu již zmíněných románů - zápletky, vypravěče a postav - ve vztahu k materiálu, který Hurstonová sesbirala během svého výzkumu.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis is an analysis of folklore and fiction in Zora Neale Hurston’s two novels Jonah’s Gourd Vine and Their Eyes Were Watching God. The main argument of this thesis is that the novels can be treated as examples of post-modern ethnography. In the introduction, the readers are provided with the insight to the contemporary theory in ethnography and literary studies, the definition of post-modern ethnography, and the reevaluation of Hurston and her texts within the context of this discourse. An analysis of the main textual levels – the plot, narrative, and characters – follows. These levels of the texts are examined in relation to the material Hurston collected during her research in the South.
