Codex in the Universitätsbibliothek Graz: selected research methods in the digital environment applied in Auxiliary Sciences of History

Abstract:

The Master Diploma Thesis deals with the application of selected research methods in analysis of Codex from Universitätsbibliothek Graz. It is preceded by theoretical introduction to the topic of digitizing historical sources. The thesis is an outline to the work with original sources in the digital environment and the application of some new methods in Codex analysis based on traditional research. Furthermore it also attempts to introduce this topic and innovative tools to fellow students (potential future users?). First, theoretical chapter looks into the questions of understanding of digitizing original sources, heterogeneous data in the digital environment, the successive methodological research transformation in Auxiliary Sciences of History focused on codicology and palaeography. The following analytical part defines the Codex (and its digital version), it provides its codicological analysis using model of Gothic bookbindings, graphical representation of the structure of the body and watermarks on handmade paper, description of notes etc. The aforementioned part discusses also theoretical part about watermark documentation methods. The next part briefly discuss characteristics of the writing. The last chapter deals with content of individual texts of the Codex. Annex of this paper is a digital version of the source and watermark images made by NIR method (near infrared thermography) used in UB Graz.

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práca sa zaoberá uplatnením vybraných metód výskumu pri spracovaní kódexu z Universitätsbibliothek Graz, ktorému predchádza teoretický úvod do témy digitalizovania historických prameňov. Jej cieľom je načrtnutie práce s prameňmi v digitálnom prostredí a aplikácia niektorých nových metód pri analýze kódexu na základoch tradičného výskumu. Vedľajším cieľom práce je taktiež uviesť túto tematiku a inovatívne nástroje pre ďalších študentov odboru (možných budúcich užívateľov?). Prvá teoretická kapitola zahŕňa predovšetkým otázky chápania digitalizácie prameňov, heterogenity dát v digitálnom prostredí, postupnej metodologickej premeny výskumu v PVH zameranej na kodikológiu a paleografiu. Nasledujúca analytická časť definuje kódex (i jeho digitálnu verziu). Prináša jeho kodikologický rozbor s využitím modelu gotických knižných väzieb, grafickým znázornením štruktúry korpusu a filigránov na ručne robenom papieri, popisom zápisov atď. Obsahuje aj teoretickú časť o spôsoboch dokumentácie filigránov. Nasledujúca časť stručne charakterizuje jazykovú stránku kódexu. Posledná kapitola sa zaoberá obsahom jednotlivých textov kódexu. Prílohou práce je digitálna verzia prameňa a snímky filigránov vyhotovených metódou NIR (near infrared thermography) využívanou v UB Graz.
