Fan Fiction: genre varieties and author's style

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to introduce fan fiction and its genre varieties, the style of its authors and the fan fiction texts and their relation to the original work. The definitions of the genres of fan fiction are only agreed on by the community, and so this thesis is to either prove or refute their accuracy. To achieve these goals, a corpus of fan texts of two different fandoms is analyzed according to a methodological framework based on the Hallidayan theory of tenor, field, mode and their metafunctions. The findings are then to be compared. The hypotheses regarding the definitions of the genres chosen to be studied in this thesis were all proven to be considerably accurate, although depending on the author of the text, the lines between some of them might become blurry in any given text.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je představit fan fiction a její žánrové varianty, styl jejích autorů a textů a jejich vztah k původnímu dílu. Definice žánrů fan fiction existují pouze na základě konsensu komunity, a tudíž má tato práce za cíl také ověřit jejich platnost. K dosažení těchto cílů je analyzován korpus fan fiction textů dvou různých fandomů podle Hallidayovské teorie field, tenor, mode a jejich metafunkcí. Výsledky analýz jsou následně porovnány. Bylo zjištěno, že hypotetické formulace definicí zvolených žánrů fan fiction, které byly touto prací studovány, do značné míry odpovídají skutečnosti, ačkoli v závislosti na autorovi textu mohou být hranice mezi některými z nich v daném díle mlhavé.
