Slum Tourism Phenomenon : the Case of India

Abstract:

Slum turismus je druh turismu, který ačkoli přitahuje pozornost badatelů z celého světa, se dostává zároveň do sporů v médiích. Zde se střetávají příznivci s kritiky. Slum cestovníh ruch byl obviněn ze zneužívání a voyeurismu. Jeho zastánci však tvrdí, že možnost cestovat do chudinských čtvrtí otevírá nové příležitosti pro tyto oblasti a závoreň tak otevírá oči turistů a mění jejich životy. Zůstává otázkou; zda je slum turistika považována za druh cestovního ruchu, který je přínosem pro všechny zúčastněné? Tato výzkumná práce se skládá ze dvou částí. V části A je popsán hlavní výzkumu, část B je potom doplňková. Cílem výzkumu je zjistit, jak provozovat slum turistiku tak, aby byla prospěšná pro obě strany – jak pro turisty, tak i pro hostitelskou komunitu. Sekundárním cílem je pak popsat obecné vnímání a představy českých občanů o tomto druhu turistiky. Tato studie má character jak průzkumný, tak i popisný. Díký spolupráci s Reality Tours&Travel (úspěšnou organizací, působící v největší chudinské oblasti Dharavi), byly popsány úspěšné metody, jak správně slum turistiku provozovat. Jsou jednoduché, takže mohou být snadno osvojeny i jinými podobnými organizacemi. Při provádění primárního výzkumu v české repuiblice, bylo dotazováno 51 respondentů. Výsledky ukazují, že většina respondentů o tento druh turistiky zájem nemá nebo o ní nikdy neslyšeli. Čtenáři mohou take sledovat výskyt negativních asociací. Tento výzkum dává čtenářům možnost získat hlubší a přesnější pochopení slum turistiky. Potencionálně je tato práce více cennější pro organizace, které mají zájem tuto oblast cestovního ruchu dale rozvíjet a podporovat.

Abstract:

Slum tourism is a niche type of tourism that has nevertheless attracted the attention of investigators from all over the world, boosted by controversies in the media. There are critics and supporters. Slum tourism has been accused of exploitation and voyeurism. However, its proponents claim that tourism opens new opportunities for slum dwellers to improve their poor conditions, while opening the eyes and changing the lives of the people who visit slums. Everybody is arguing; but what if we think about slum tourism as a type of tourism that benefits everyone involved? This research paper consists of two parts. Part A, the main part of the research, and part B, the supplementary part. The aim of the research is to identify how to make slum tourism beneficial for both parties – tourists and the hosting community. The secondary aim is to describe the general perceptions and ideas about slum tourism of Czech citizens. This study is of both: exploratory and descriptive character. Through cooperation with Reality Tours and Travel successful organization operating in Dharavi, India's biggest slum, successful methods to manage slum tourism beneficially have been described. They are simple and can be adopted by other similar organizations as well. While conducting primary research in the Czech Republic, 51 respondents were interviewed. The results show that the majority of respondents were not aware of or interested in slum tourism. Readers can also observe the prevalence of negative associations. This research gives readers the opportunity to gain a deep and accurate understanding of slum tourism. It is potentially even more valuable for organizations interested in promoting and developing slum tours.
