The Dropout Variables Related to the Early-School Girls' Withdrawal from Organized Physical Activities and Sports

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce chce přispět k existujícímu souhrnu poznání ve sportovním tréninku mládeže a pomoct snížit odpadávání dívek. Studie se opírá o Teorii přechodu (Theory of Transition) a její první dvě etapy celoživotního sportovního vývoje. Bylo nahráno 299 krátkých telefonních hovorů s rodiči z původního záměrně vybraného souboru 421 dívek ve věku 5,5-10,5 let. Byly provedeny semistrukturované rozhovory se 66 participantkami k získání autentických odpovědí po 4-10 letech od doby, kdy opustily svůj sport. Jejich výpovědi byly zakódovány do kategorií a kategoriálních klustrů v pěti doménách pro následné zpracování deskriptivní a vztahovou statistikou. Pouze kategoriální klastry se ukázaly být rozhodujícími důvody pro odchod dívek z organizovaných tělesných aktivit (OPA). Tyto klastry měly tři společné vlastnosti – vyvíjely se, byly multidimenziální a zasazené v kontextu. Více než třetina dívek naprosto rezignovala na pravidelné aktivity. Téměř jedna polovina přešla do OPA s nižšími nároky nebo do jiných pravidelných aktivit. Další výzkum by měl zahrnout chlapce i dívky v různých sportech. Je třeba vyvinout větší úsilí k tomu, aby se OPA více zpřístupnily všem dětem, zejména dívkám, a ke sportující mládeži se dostali trenéři s odbornou úrovní.

Abstract:

This dissertation thesis aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in youth sport training and help reduce the girls’ dropout. The study builds on the Theory of Transition and its first two stages of life-span sports development. 299 short telephone calls were recorded with parents from the original purposive sample of 421 girls aged between 5.5-10.5. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 66 participants in order to gain their authentic answers after 4-10 years since they left their sport. Their statements were encoded in categories and category clusters in five domains for subsequent descriptive and related statistics. Only the category clusters appeared to be the decisive reasons for the girls’ withdrawal from organized physical activities (OPA). The clusters possessed three common aspects–they were progressive, multidimensional, and context-based. More than one-third of the girls completely resigned from regular activities. Almost one-half transferred to low-demanding OPA or to other regular activities. Further research should involve both genders in different sports. Greater efforts are needed to make OPA more accessible to all children, especially the girls, and to bring expert coaches to the sporting youth.
