Automatic Captions on YouTube. An Analysis of the Accuracy of Automatic Subtitles in the Videos of the Universities of the Netherlands and of Flanders

Abstract:

V tejto práci sa zaoberám presnosťou holandských automatických titulkov na YouTube. Na tento účel sa porovnávajú automatické titulky a prepis dvadsiatich ôsmich fragmentov prednášok z Universiteit van Nederland a Universiteit van Vlaanderen. V analýze sa kladie dôraz na tieto premenné: pohlavie, naciolekt, téma a nespisovný jazyk. V práci sú zodpovedané nasledujúce otázky: ako presné sú automatické titulky na YouTube? Existuje signifikantný rozdiel v rozpoznávaní medzi mužskými a ženskými rečníkmi a medzi dvoma naciolektami (holandskou holandčinou a belgickou holandčinou)? Existuje pozitívna korelácia medzi počtom prvkov nespisovného jazyka a počtom chýb? V poslednej časti tejto práce sa diskutuje o možných vysvetleniach pre chybne vygenerované slová.

Abstract:

In this thesis I examine the accuracy of Dutch automatic captions on YouTube. For this purpose, the subtitles and transcription of twenty-eight fragments of lectures of the University of the Netherlands and Flanders are being compared.In the analysis the focus is on the following variables: gender, natiolect, topic and substandard-language elements and the following questions are answered: how accurate are the automatic captions on YouTube? Is there a significant difference in the recognition between male and female speakers and between the two national varieties of Dutch (Netherlandic Dutch and belgian Dutch)? Is there a positive correlation between the number of substandard-language elements and the word error rate? In the last part of this thesis possible explanations for errors in the analysed subtitles are being discussed.
