The Relationships between Workaholism, Work Engagement and Well-being

Abstract:

Tématem práce je souvislost workoholismu a pracovní angažovanosti s psychologickým well-beingem. Workoholismus je konceptualizován jako dvojdimenzionální jev sestávající z nutkání pracovat a nad-měrného zapojení do práce. Pracovní angažovanost je definována jako trojdimenzionální trvalý stav charakteristický energií, oddaností a pohroužením se do práce. Psychologický well-being sestává ze šesti dimenzí – sebepřijetí, pozitivní vztahy s druhými, autonomie, zvládání životního prostředí, smysl života a osobní růst. Předpoklady výzkumu jsou, že workoholismus souvisí negativně s psychologickým well-beingem a pracovní angažovanost souvisí pozitivně s psychologickým well-beingem. Jedná se o kvantita-tivní korelační výzkum s využitím tří dotazníkových metod - Dutch Workaholism Scale, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale a Scale of Psychological Well-being. Výzkumný soubor tvoří 266 respondentů, kteří byli osloveni elektronickou cestou – skrz sociální síť Facebook, emailem a přes inzerát umístěný v informačním systému Masarykovy univerzity. Výsledky dokládají souvislost pracovní angažovanosti s psychologickým well-beingem. Souvislost workoholismu a psychologického well-beingu nebyla dolože-na. Výsledky výzkumu jsou diskutovány spolu s možnými omezeními a náměty pro další výzkum.

Abstract:

The topic of the thesis is the relationship between workaholism, work engagement and psychological well-being. Workaholism is conceptualized as a two-dimensional phenomenon: it comprises working extensively and working compulsively. Work engagement is defined as a three-dimensional state charac-terized by vigour, dedication, and absorption. Psychological well-being is comprised of six dimensions: self-acceptance, positive relations with others, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, and personal growth. The assumptions of the research are that workaholism is negatively related to psycho-logical well-being and work engagement is positively related to psychological well-being. The research is quantitative. There are three research methods: the Dutch Workaholism Scale, the Utrecht Work En-gagement Scale, and the Scale of Psychological Well-being. The research sample consists of 266 respond-ents. The respondents were contacted electronically: through the social networking site Facebook, by e-mail, and through an advertisement placed in the information system of Masaryk University. The rela-tionships are analysed by means of correlation analysis. The results demonstrate a relationship between work engagement and psychological well-being. Not enough evidence has been obtained to prove a rela-tionship between workaholism and psychological well-being. The results are discussed along with possi-ble limitations and suggestions for further research.
