Stability of bentonite colloids

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je studium stability bentonitových koloidů během interakce bentonitů s vodou. Pro studium byly zvoleny tzv. sedimentační experimenty. Suspenze bentonitu v deionizované vodě byla v pravidelných časových intervalech vzorkována ze zvoleného odběrového místa. Bylo měřeno množství sedimentovaných částic a jeho změny v čase. Byl sledován vliv doby sycení bentonitu, koncentrace elektrolytu (NaCl) a jeho typu (KCl, NaCl, CaCl2 a MgCl2) na stabilitu bentonitových koloidů. Bylo zjištěno, že sedimentace koloidních částic probíhá ve třech fázích. Nejvýraznějším bodem na všech sedimentačních křivkách je začátek druhé fáze, který koresponduje s výrazným zvýšením množství sedimentovaných částic. Efekt různých vlivů na stabilitu koloidů je tedy nejzřetelnější právě v tomto bodě. Stabilita koloidů je snižována při vzrůstající koncentraci NaCl a rostoucí době sycení. Stabilita je také ovlivněna typem elektrolytu – nejvíce snižuje stabilitu KCl, následuje MgCl2, nejméně pak NaCl a CaCl2. Během sedimentačních experimentů byl v suspenzi pozorován vznik několika vrstev. Granulometrická analýza potvrdila, že se vrstvy liší jak koncentracemi, tak i velikostmi částic. Časový vývoj těchto vrstev ukázal, že v průběhu času hranice vrstvy klesají vlivem gravitace. Počátek druhé fáze koresponduje s přechodem koncentračního rozhraní, které rozděluje dvě vrstvy s největším rozdílem koncentrací částic, přes úroveň odběrového místa.

Abstract:

The objective of this study was to investigate the stability of bentonite colloids during the interaction of bentonite with water under different conditions. Classical sedimentation tests are an easy method for the study of colloid stability. The suspension of bentonite was sampled at regular intervals from the level of the selected reference point. Amount of sedimented colloidal particles and its time evolution was measured. There were studied the effect of bentonite saturation time, the concentration of electrolyte (NaCl) and type of the electrolyte (KCl, NaCl, CaCl2 and MgCl2) on the stability of colloidal particles. It was found that sedimentation of colloidal particles occurs in three phases. The most significant point on the all sedimentation curves is the beginning of the second phase, which corresponds to the rapid increase of the amount of sedimented particles. For this reason, the effect of different conditions on the stability of particles is the most evident at this point. Stability of bentonite colloids decreases with increasing concentration of the electrolyte and saturation time. Stability is also influenced by the type of the electrolyte – the stability is particularly reduced by KCl, then by MgCl2, and at least by NaCl and CaCl2. During the sedimentation experiments several layers in suspension were formed. The granulometric analyses have shown that the layers have significantly different particle size and concentration. There were studied the time evolution of these layers. Over time the layers are moved downward by gravity and it was found that the beginning of the second phase is related to the transition of one of the concentration boundary between two layers, which have the most different concentration of particles, through sampling point level.
