Pioneers on Cejl: memory in legitimizing strategies used the creative class

Abstract:

Brněnská čtvrť Cejl se díky aktivitě kulturních projektů postupně zbavuje nálepky nebezpečného ghetta a stále častěji se o lokalitě přemýšlí jako o místu příležitostí a kulturního bohatství. Tuto proměnu postojů vůči lokalitě interpretuji především skrze koncept kreativní třídy Richarda Floridy a tvrdím, že její étos, hodnoty a vkus umožňují lokalitu spatřovat jako místo svobody a jedinečné kulturní hodnoty, které nemá ve městě obdobu. V první části práce představuji základní koncepty práce: Na jedné straně uvádím čtenáře do Floridovy teorie kreativní třídy a ukazuji, jakým způsobem bylo nutné koncept upravit, aby odpovídal brněnskému kontextu. Na druhé straně pracuji s konceptem gentrifikace a především se spotřebním způsobem jejího vysvětlování. V následující kapitole popisuji vzestup brněnské ekonomiky vědění a argumentuji, že v Brně roste zastoupení kreativní třídy s habitem, který preferuje bydlení, práci a spotřebu ve vnitřním městě. V příběhu objevování Cejlu hraje klíčovou roli také fenomén vzpomínání na jeho meziválečnou minulost. Toto vzpomínání umožňuje kreativní třídě na jedné straně v lokalitě spatřovat kulturní bohatství meziválečné židovské a německé populace, a na druhé straně představuje legitimizační nástroj usnadňující kreativní proměny čtvrti. V poslední kapitole srovnávám sebevědomou kreativní proměnu Cejlu s kritickým konceptem pionýrské gentrifikace. Cejl je některými představiteli kreativní třídy vnímán jako prázdné místo k proměně čtvrti v kreativní sousedství, navzdory tomu, že se čtvrť odcizí jejím původním obyvatelům.

Abstract:

Neighborhood Cejl in Brno experiences a shift of its cultural representation. Due to the activity of cultural projects such as Ghettofest and the planned Creative Center, the mainstream representation of this neighborhood as a dangerous ghetto is shifting to the place of opportunities and cultural wealth. I am interpreting this shift with the help of the concept of creative class and I argue that the ethos, values, and taste of the creative class enable it to recognize the neighborhood as a place of freedom with unique cultural values that cannot be matched by any other part of the city. In the first part I will define the key concept of this paper: on one hand I will introduce the theory of creative class by Richard Florida and explain the necessity to modify the concept in order to capture the local cultural context of Brno. On the one hand, I will explain the concept of gentrification and its consumable explanation side in particular. In the next chapter, I would like to describe the rise of knowledge economy in Brno and I argue that the employees in those sectors of economy prefer to live and spend their free time in the inner city. In the story of exploring Cejl, the phenomenon of remembering the positively reinterpreted events of the interwar period plays a crucial role. This remembering enables the creative class on one hand to recognize the cultural wealth seen in its multicultural German and Jewish past. On the other hand, it provides a tool of legitimization and enhances the creative shift of the neighborhood. In the last chapter, I compare the creative transformation of Cejl with the critical concept of the pioneer gentrification. The creative class recognizes Cejl as an empty space without any memories that provides a freedom for realizations of the visions for the creative neighborhood, regardless the expectable alienation of the quarter from its former inhabitants.
