Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá používáním literatury, a především dětské literatury, v hodinách anglického jazyka na středních školách a jako příklad uvádí dílo Alenka v říši divů. Konkrétně řeší to, jak daná kniha může být použita v hodinách anglického jazyka pro rozvíjení jazykových znalostí a kulturního povědomí studentů. Proto tato práce nabízí přehled metodologických přístupů a technik, které mohou být aplikovány při používání literatury v hodinách anglického jazyka spolu s přehledem důvodů a výhod, které zařazení literatury do výuky přináší.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis investigates the use of children’s literature in secondary school English lessons with the focus on the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Specifically, it examines different ways in which this novel could be used to enrich the student’s language skills and develop their cultural awareness. The theoretical part of the thesis provides an overview of the past and current use of literature in English language teaching, arguments against and for its use as well as suggestions of approaches and methods for using literature to teach English. Furthermore, it explains what makes children’s literature the right choice of text and justifies the selection of the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The empirical part takes the form of action research and it puts the theoretical suggestions defined in the theoretical part into practice. Over the course of six lessons, the proposed ways of using the novel were observed, analysed, and modified. The outcome is an example model of how the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland can be used in English lessons to develop students’ language proficiency and cultural awareness.
