Inventory management mobile application for the Masaryk University

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na vývoj mobilní aplikace pro inventarizaci majetku Masarykovy univerzity. Hlavním důvodem pro její vznik bylo nahrazení aktuálně používaných terminálů čárového kódu. Ty jsou již zastaralé a neposkytují svým uživatelům dostatečný komfort. Zejména však nejsou schopny pracovat online. Cílem práce proto bylo vytvořit mobilní aplikaci a její serverovou část, která umožní provádění standardní inventury a svým uživatelům nabídne přívětivější grafické rozhraní a možnost synchronizace dat se serverem díky připojení k síti Wi-Fi. Snímání čárových kódů inventarizovaného majetku bude zajištěno bezdrátovou čtečkou čárových kódů připojenou pomocí Bluetooth a využívající technologie Human Interface Device. Text práce je rozdělen do čtyř kapitol. První dvě čtenáři představují operační systém Android, jeho historii, strukturu a také náležitosti aplikací určených pro tento operační systém. Následující kapitola je již věnována procesu návrhu mobilní aplikace. Po úvodním představení aktuálně používaných inventarizačních nástrojů je čtenář seznámen s návrhem databázového modelu a rozhraní pro síťovou komunikaci. Konec kapitoly je pak zaměřen na uživatelské rozhraní mobilní aplikace. Poslední kapitola přináší vhled do implementace. Zde jsou přiblíženy některé implementační detaily a technologie, jež byly při vývoji využity. Nechybí ani představení použitého vývojového prostředí a jednotlivých aktivit, z nichž se aplikace skládá.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the development of a mobile application for inventory management of Masaryk University. The main reason behind its creation was a need for replacement of currently used barcode readers, which are getting obsolete and do not provide sufficient comfort to their users. But most importantly, they cannot work online. The goal of this thesis was to create a mobile application and its server part, which are able to perform the process of standard inventory and offer more friendly graphical user interface and the option to synchronize data with a server thanks to Wi-Fi connection. Barcodes of inventoried items are read using an external wireless barcode reader which is connected to the phone via Bluetooth as Human Interface Device. Text of this thesis is divided into four chapters. The first two chapters introduce the reader to the operating system Android, its history, structure and application requirements for the system. The following chapter is dedicated to the process of design of the application. After a brief presentation of currently used tools for inventory management, the reader is introduced to the design of the database model and interface for network communication. End of the chapter is focused on the design of the user interface. The last chapter brings insight into the process of implementation. In the chapter, there are mentioned implementation details and technologies which were used during the process of implementation. An introduction to the used development environment and a description of all activities which form the final mobile application are not missing in this chapter either.
