German Language Motivation in the Context of Teaching a Foreign Language for Specific and Academic Purposes

Abstract:

Předložená disertační práce se zabývá tématem motivace k učení se němčině, které je zasazeno do kontextu výuky cizího odborného a akademického jazyka. Teoreticky se práce opírá zejména o Gardnerovu teorii motivace, teorii sebeurčení a atribuční teorii. Disertační výzkum proběhl v prostředí výuky cizího odborného a akademického jazyka na Masarykově univerzitě v Brně, kde jsou studenti všech nefilologických oborů povinni složit v rámci studia zkoušku z jednoho cizího odborného a akademického jazyka, přičemž si tento cizí jazyk mohou sami zvolit. Právě skutečnost povinné jazykové zkoušky jsme v rámci našeho výzkumu zohlednili. Výzkumný design sestával ze dvou na sobě nezávislých výzkumných fází. V první kvalitativní výzkumné fázi jsme provedli polostrukturované interview s celkem 12 respondenty ze čtyř fakult Masarykovy univerzity, kde se v rámci povinně-volitelné výuky cizího odborného a akademického jazyka vyučuje i němčina. Cílem této výzkumné fáze bylo vytvoření individuálních motivačních profilů a motivačních identifikátorů, které by popisovaly motivační znaky respondentů jednotlivých fakult. Druhá výzkumná fáze postupovala kvantitativně. Pomocí elektronického dotazníku byla sesbírána data od 122 respondentů, která byla dále statisticky zpracována a podlehla mj. deskriptivní a faktorové analýze. Srovnání výsledků obou výzkumných fází prokázalo shodu téměř u všech vytvořených motivačních identifikátorů, přičemž jako naprosto zásadním právě pro motivaci k učení se odborné a akademické němčině se ukázal zejména motiv relevance.

Abstract:

The present dissertation discusses German learning motivation in the context of teaching a foreign specific and academic language. Gardner's model of motivation is the core of the theory of this dissertation together with self-definition theory and attribution theory. Dissertation research was based on a foreign language for specific and academic purposes education at Masaryk University in Brno. All students of non-philological majors are required to pass an exam in a foreign language for specific and academic purposes of their choice. This requirement to pass the exam was taken into account when the research was conducted. The research design consisted of two separate research stages. The qualitative stage is based on semi-structured interview with the total of 12 respondents from four different faculties of Masaryk University with German being an optional foreign language for specific and academic purposes. The objective of this stage was to create individual motivational profiles and motivational identifiers describing motivational patterns of the respondents. The second stage was quantitative. Data was collected from 122 respondents by an electronic questionnaire and was further statistically processed. Descriptive and factor analysis were applied among others. Combining the results of the two research stages indicated a correspondence of almost all of the motivational identifiers. The crucial one in terms of German for specific and academic purposes learning motivation proved to be the element of relevance.
