Herland: The Relevance of Feminist Dystopia Today

Anotace:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat tři vybrané feministické dystopické romány, které jsou napsány americkými autorkami: When She Woke (2012) od Hillary Jordan, Future Home of the Living God (2017) od Louise Erdrich a Gather the Daughters (2017) od Jennie Melamed. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části: první, teoretická část, se zabývá historií dystopie jako literárního žánru, včetně jeho spojitosti s utopií. Dále se tato část zabývá feministickou dys-topií, která se řadí pod dystopii. Feministická dystopie je žánr, který především spojuje femi-nistickou teorii a kritiku západní společnosti. Analytická část se zaměřuje na analýzu sam-otných románů. Ačkoliv je zasazení a hlavní postavy každého románu odlišné, romány spojují témata, které se často objevují ve feministické dystopii: ženské role, reprodukční práva, či náboženství. Analytická část si také klade za cíl tyto romány zahrnout do kontextu současné Americké kultury.

Abstract:

The thesis aims to analyse three selected feminist dystopian novels written by American au-thors: When She Woke (2012) by Hillary Jordan, Future Home of the Living God (2017) by Louise Erdrich and Gather the Daughters (2017) by Jennie Melamed. The thesis is divided into two parts: the first part, theoretical one, focuses on the history of dystopia as a literary genre, including its connection to utopia. Next, this part addresses feminist dystopia, which is classified under dystopian genre. Feminist dystopia is a genre that primarily combines feminist theory and critique of Western society. The analytical part focuses on the analysis of the three novels themselves. Although the setting and the main characters of each novel are different, the novels are united by themes that often appear in feminist dystopia: women's roles, reproductive rights, and religion. The analytical part also aims to place these novels in the context of contemporary American culture.
