Emblematic illustrations of death and hell in the work of Jeremias Drexel

Anotace:

Práce studuje emblematické ilustrace dvou knih jezuitského kazatele Jeremiáše Drexela (1581–1648). Jedná se o knihy Aeternitatis Prodromus Mortis a Infernum Damnatorum, jejichž tématy je smrt a peklo, což tituly řadí do okruhu křesťanské eschatologické koncepce posledních věcí člověka. Čtenář je seznámen s kontextem vzniku obou knih, s jednotlivými ilustracemi a nakonec i s autentickou jezuitskou imaginací, která je důležitá pro pochopení funkce ilustrací. Cílem práce je interpretace emblematických ilustrací v kontextu samotného textu knihy a jezuitské imaginace, která vychází ze složité meditační praxe – a tím objasnění jejich formy a funkce.

Abstract:

The thesis studies the emblematic illustrations of two books by the Jesuit preacher Jeremiah Drexel (1581–1648). These are the books Aeternitatis Prodromus Mortis and Infernum Damnatorum, whose themes are death and hell, which places the titles in the circle of the Christian eschatological concept of the last things of man. The reader is introduced to the context of the creation of both books, to the individual illustrations and finally to the authentic Jesuit imagination, which is important for understanding the function of the illustrations. The aim of the thesis is the interpretation of the emblematic illustrations in the context of the text of the books itself and the Jesuit imagination, which is based on a complex meditation practice - and thus the clarification of their form and function.
