Second Demographic Transition in some Western and Eastern European countries 1990-2017

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci se zabývám vývojem druhé demografické tranzice ve vybraných východních a západních evropských zemích v letech 1990-2017. V teoretické části představuji teorii druhé demografické tranzice, související teorie a podmínky druhé demografické tranzice. Dále rozebírám diverzitu procesu druhé demografické tranzice v Evropě. Na základě teoretické části odvozuji hypotézy. V metodologické části představuji dva indexy druhé demografické tranzice a důkladně rozebírám postup pro jejich sestavení. Na základě indexu demografického chování a indexu hodnot za použití dat z European Values Study analyzuji osm evropských zemí v letech 1990-2017. Zkoumám rovněž faktory ovlivňující vývoj druhé demografické tranzice ve vybraných zemích, a to hrubý domácí produkt, genderovou nerovnost, postmaterialismus, vzdělání a urbanizaci. Stěžejním výsledkem je odlišnost vývoje druhé demografické tranzice v zemích východní Evropy, což podrobně rozebírám v diskusní části práce. Dále jsem ukázala, že proces druhé demografické tranzice ve zkoumaných zemích závisí na HDP, míře genderové nerovnosti, podílu terciárně vzdělaných a urbanizaci, zato vliv postmaterialismu jsem prokázala jen částečně. V závěru práce shrnuji hlavní výsledky a uvádím doporučení pro další výzkum.

Abstract:

In this thesis, I examine the process of the second demographic transition in some Eastern and Western European countries between 1990 and 2017. In the theoretical part, I introduce the theory of the second demographic transition, related theories and conditions of the second demographic transition. Furthermore, I analyse the diversity of the process of the second demographic transition in Europe. Based on the theoretical part, I derive hypotheses. In the methodological part, I introduce two indices of the second demographic transition and thoroughly discuss the procedure for their construction. Based on the Demographic Behaviour Index and the Values Index, using data from the European Values Study, I analyse eight European countries between 1990 and 2017. I also examine the factors influencing the process of the second demographic transition in the selected countries, namely gross domestic product, gender inequality, postmaterialism, education and urbanisation. The main result is the confirmation of the different process of the second demographic transition in Eastern European countries, which I discuss in detail in the discussion section of the paper. Furthermore, I confirm that the process of the second demographic transition in the countries under study depends on GDP, the level of gender inequality, the share of tertiary education and urbanization, while I only partially demonstrate the influence of postmaterialism. I conclude the paper by summarizing the main results and making recommendations for further research.
