Tradiční japonská metoda opalování dřevěných fasádních prvků

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce je věnována tradiční japonské metodě opalování dřeva, yakisugi. V důsledku opálení povrchu fasádních prvků, vykazuje dřevo nejen rozdílné fyzikálně-mechanické, ale i estetické vlastnosti. Při hlubším pochopení této tradiční metody opalování a jejím vlivu na materiálové vlastnosti dřeva lze vyvinout fasádní prvky s dlouhodobou životností, a to bez použití dalších chemických látek. Cílem práce bylo komplexní pochopení procesu opalování dřeva, především z pohledu doby trvání procesu a dosažené teploty, vlivu na chemické složení a na vybrané fyzikální a mechanické vlastnosti dřeva jedle (Abies alba L.), smrku (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) a jasanu (Fraxinus excelsior). V práci bylo využito jak tradiční metody opalování, tak i metody upravené z důvodu vyšší kontroly procesu. Z výsledků lze pozorovat, že během procesu opalování bylo dosaženo teplot až 800 °C, a to v závislosti na pozici v měřené desce. Jak teplota, tak doba trvání procesu opalování dřeva významně ovlivňuje tloušťku zuhelnatělé vrstvy (3–7 mm), která má významný vliv na změnu materiálových vlastností. Při využití upravené metody opalování bylo dosaženo homogennější tloušťky zuhelnatělé vrstvy. Opalování dřeva vede k výraznému poklesu povrchové hustoty, zvýšení příjmu vody, v důsledku zvýšení pórovitosti struktury, a snížení tvrdosti povrchu. Analýza dřeva jedle a jasanu prokázala zvýšení protipožární odolnosti, a to v rozsahu až 110 %, v závislosti na použité metodě měření. Předložená práce prokazuje, že opalování dřeva pomocí tradiční japonské metody má významný potenciál pro úpravu povrchu fasádních prvků, čemuž nasvědčuje i zvyšující se zájem o takto modifikované dřevo.

Abstract:

In this study, I examined a traditional Japanese method of wood charring, yakisugi. This method involves charring the surface of wood, giving it a number of beneficial properties such as reduced water absorption, improved resistance to wood decay, increased fire resistance and enhanced aesthetic qualities. By gaining a deeper into this method and understanding its effects on wood properties, sustainable wood façades can be developed. This research aims to contribute to improving the longevity of façades without relying on chemical additives. The goal was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the traditional Japanese wood charring method, particularly focusing on the duration of the process and the temperatures involved. An important line of inquiry was the potential applicability of the wood charring method to Central European native woods – fir (Abies alba L.), spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and ash (Fraxinus excelsior). Another point of investigation was an analysis of how the yakisugi method influences the physical and chemical properties of wood. The research concluded with an exploration of the extent to which charring affects the fire resistance of wood. In terms of methodology, the combustion process followed traditional procedures. To enhance it, the ignition stage was modified using a gas burner. The resulting charred boards were analysed for any physical and chemical changes. Additionally, a test was conducted to determine fire resistance. During the study, it was observed that temperatures of up to 800 °C could be achieved during the charring process. Both the temperature and the duration of the process significantly influenced the thickness of the char layer. Developing the method by introducing a gas burner improved control over the combustion process. During the yakisugi process, the wood’s macrostructure remained largely intact. Charring of the surface resulted in a decrease in the wood’s surface density, an increase in water absorption rate and a reduction in hardness. Tests on fir and ash wood treated with the yakisugi method indicated enhanced fire resistance compared to untreated wood. Through the traditional method, efficient charring of wood can be accomplished due to the elevated temperatures. To ascertain the precise temperatures and charring durations that achieve optimal durability, additional investigations are necessary. Nonetheless, this research indicates that this method possesses significant potential for wood surface treatment.
