The Pioneers of Cyberculture: Cyberpunk and Digerati

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá sociálními fenomény kyberpunk a digerati v širším kontextu kyberkultury. Staví se k nim jako k hnutím, která svými rozpravami a diskursy pomáhala utvářet kulturní identitu pokročilých informačních a komunikačních technologií (ICT), stejně jako se zasloužila o formování kulturní povahy rané i současné kyberkultury. Obě hnutí jsou postupně popsána jako sociální skupiny i jako diskursivní komunity. Kyberpunk je představen jako literární žánr a sociální hnutí tvořící underground kyberkultury a spojující informační technologie se životním stylem. Toto hnutí (složené z různých subkultur) vytvořilo vlastní étos, filosofii a představy vztahující se ke kultuře, politice i morálce v kyberkultuře. Digerati jsou představeni jako hnutí navazující na kyberpunk, jenž se zasloužilo o propagaci ICT (obzvláště internetu) a o rozšíření kyberkulturních témat do společenského mainstreamu. Digeratům se věnujeme jako literátům i samostatné virtuální třídě elitních pracovníků v ICT. V závěru práce jsou srovnány nejdůležitější vize a prognózy obou hnutí s širším kontextem kyberkultury, jejím vývojem, problémy a aktuálním stavem. Přístup kyberpunku a digeratů k některým kyberkulturním tématům je konfrontován s několika alternativními pohledy.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with social phenomenons cyberpunk and digerati in context of broader cyberculture. We conceptualize them as movements that have helped to shape cultural identity of information and communication technologies (ICT) via their narratives and discourses and that have contributed to formation of early as well as current cyberculture‘s cultural character. Both movements are subsequently described as social groups and also discourse communities. Cyberpunk is presented as a literary genre and as an underground social movement that have put lifestyle with ICT together. This movement (compound of diverse subcultures) created specific ethos, phylosophy and ideas related to culture, politics and morals of cyberculture. Digerati are presented as a movement following cyberpunk that have merited in propagation ICT (especially the internet) and expansion of cybercultural topics to cultural mainstream. We attend to digerati as writers or publicists as well as virtual class of elite ICT workers. In the conclusion of this thesis are compared the most important visions and predictions of both movements with broader context of cyberculture, its development, issues and current situation. The standpoint of cyberpunk and digerati is confronted wiht alternative views.
