Golf as a Social Phenomenon in Contemporary Scotland

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to present golf and its culture in the context of contemporary Scotland. The paper attempts to explore the relationship between the game, its culture, and the country by discussing different points of view. To answer this question, newspaper articles from different countries were examined and compared, and two online surveys were distributed. Results of the main survey showed that only 10% of people in Scotland perceive the game as a sport, whereas 50% of respondents from different countries stated that they perceive golf as a sport. Findings indicated that the assumption that the game has a different perception in Scotland was valid. Based on the research of newspapers, the game seems to be more inclusive in Scotland. The data from both surveys revealed that, whereas the average non-Scottish person perceives golf as a sport, the average Scottish respondent views golf as a leisure activity. However, the survey also revealed that although most of the Scottish participants were younger than the Czech participants, 25% of them stated that they already have direct experience with golf.

Abstract:

Smyslem této bakalářské práce je nastínit problematiku golfu a jeho kultury v kontextu moderního Skotska. Autor práce se pokouší odhalit souvislosti mezi hrou samotnou, golfovou kulturou a Skotskem pomocí diskuze vedené na základě nově získaných poznatků. K poskytnutí odpovědi na tuto otázku posloužily dvě metody výzkumu. První metoda spočívala v detailním prozkoumávání článků novin z různých zemí a jejich následným porovnáváním. Další metodou byla distribuce dvou dotazníků. Výsledky těchto dotazníků ukázaly, že pouze 10% lidí ve Skotksu vnímá hru jako sport, kdežto účastníci českého dotazníku měli naprosto odlišný názor, kdy 50% dotázaných odpovědělo, že golf vnímají jako sport. Další výsledky získané na základě rozboru textů novin potvrdily původní domněku, že je golf ve Skotsku spíše vnímán jako poměrně dostupná volnočasová aktivita, kterou může provozovat každý. Výsledky obou dotazníků tedy ukázaly, že průměrný český účastník studie vnímá golf jako sport, mezitím co účastníci skotského dotazníku uváděli, že vnímají hru jako volnočasovou aktivitu. Dotazníky zároveň ukázaly, že se golf ve Skotsku těší velké oblibě a téměř každý čtvrtý účastník dotazníku uvedl, že někdy hrál golf, což je zajímavé i zejména proto, že se dotazníku účastnili převážně mladí lidé.
