Contradictions in The Hare Krishna movement

Abstract:

Tématem práce je pokus o zmapování a přehled nejvýznamnějších rozporů v hnutí Haré Kršna. Po krátkém historickém exkursu, seznámení se s osobností Čaitanji a Prabhupády je věnována pozornost počátkům hnutí, založení Mezinárodní společnosti pro vědomí Kršny v roce 1966 a vytvoření kolektivního orgánu GBC, spolu se zamezením prvních snah o centralizaci. Od vzniku ISKCONu se hnutí potýkalo s několika vážnými krizemi, přičemž nejvyhrocenější se ukázala problematika pokračování učitelské posloupnosti (parampary) po zakladatelově smrti, kdy skupina jím určených nástupců těžce selhala. Skandály ohledně jejich (někdy až kriminálního) chování nastolily v hnutí otázky, zda byl systém oprávněný. To vedlo k dalším sporům, které v případě hnutí IRM, zastávající koncepci ritvik, znamenalo rezignaci na žijícího zasvěcujícího učitele v ISKCONu – pro další dobu jím měl zůstat zakladatel Prabhupáda. Reforma systému „zonálních áčárjů“ v letech 1986-1987 představovala rozšíření počtu zasvěcujících učitelů a zaručila svobodný výběr pro každého oddaného. Další kapitoly pojednávají o teologických a sociálních sporech, které se v průběhu etablování ISKCONu vynořovaly. V závěrečné části nastíním současnou situaci v hnutí, probíhající reformní aktivity i „žhavá“ témata hlásící se o pozornost. Speciální kapitola je věnovaná kritickému pohledu Kundalího dáse na současnou situaci v ISKCONu spolu s jeho návrhy na řešení.

Abstract:

The subject of my work is to chart the most significant contrasts in The Hare Krishna movement. After the short historical aside and after the introduction of Caitanja and Prabhupada is attention payed to the beginning of the movement, creation of The International society for Krishna Consciousness in 1966 and creation of an authority called GBC, including first attempts of centralization. From the time when the ISKCON was established was the movement facing with some serious crisis. The most critical was the problem of the continuation of teaching succession (parampara) after the founder death, when the group of his succesors failed. Scandals related to their sometimes even criminal behaviour established questions in the movements, whether was the system competent. It leaded to another disputes, where in the case of IRM movement holding the ritvik conception, meant resignation to the living initiating teacher in ISKCON – for the following time the initiating teacher remained the founder Prabhupada. The reform of the system of zonal acharyas in years 1986-1987 represented increasing of the initiating teachers number and guaranteed the free choice for every devoted. Next chapters deals with theological and social disputes, which during the ISKCON establishing started. In the final part I will outline current situation in the movement, proceeding reform activities and actual important topics. Special chapter is devoted to a critical point of view of Kundali dasa to the current situation in ISKCON including his suggestions for solution.
